What does Community Certified Fair Trade mean?

It means that the women producing Baraka Shea Butter meet annually to review their relationship with Baraka to decide whether or not to let Baraka use their Community Certified Fair Trade logo in the coming year.

In this meeting, they discuss very important topics such as fair treatment and fair payment (premium price above market price), and priorities and issues identified by the women, such as community support, education, family, and youth.

The women who make our products are important to us, so we take this very seriously. When purchasing Baraka Shea Butter, you are guaranteed that it was produced by a woman who earned a fair income and was treated with dignity and respect.

We would like to thank the amazing women in northern Ghana who make our products because without them, this wouldn't have been possible. We would also like to thank our customers around the world for believing in Baraka and supporting our vision to make a meaningful community impact.

Wayne here, jumping in. The women who make our products and our customers deserve a lot of credit - but I also want to recognize the Baraka Team, scattered from North America to Ghana, to England, to Romania and Bangladesh. It is an incredible team that has signed up on this effort to create a world-class business that integrates and aligns social, environmental and financial impact. I am honoured to be part of this group of amazing people.

Deforestation of shea trees is on the rise.

Other than providing food, medicinal value, and natural shade, shea trees are an important part of the Ghanaian ecosystem. Unfortunately, the threat of deforestation for charcoal production is quickly rising. Collection of shea nuts and shea butter production have been part of the Ghanaian culture for centuries, but poverty and the rising demand for charcoal have forced people to cut the trees to make ends meet.

Baraka incentivises land owners to keep their shea trees by paying a premium price for their shea nuts. This not only helps the ecosystem, but provides a sustainable source of income for the community. One of the things we love about making shea butter is that nothing is wasted. The leftovers from the shea butter production are used as fuel therefore eliminating the need for firewood and charcoal!

How many steps do you think are involved in Baraka's Shea Butter making process?

Everything starts at the shea forest, where the shea nuts are handpicked, then the fun begins! Transporting, par-boiling, washing, drying, sorting, separating, crushing, roasting, kneading, whipping, straining, cooling (and some of these steps are done more than once!) and finally packing for shipment!

Imagine how many years and traditions it took to perfect this process!
