You all know I’m obsessed with this building! So here’s some more random information about it.

At first glance, the colorful fruit crowning the towers of the Sagrada Família looks like a beautiful decorative touch.

But Gaudí wasn't decorating the church.

He was telling a story.

The fruit is arranged like a giant natural calendar.

The east side of the basilica is crowned with spring fruits such as cherries, peaches, pears, plums, and loquats.

The west side features autumn harvests including apples, figs, persimmons, almonds, and chestnuts.

The transept towers complete the cycle with oranges and pomegranates.

Together, they represent the changing seasons and the cycle of life.

There's another layer to the code.

In Christian symbolism, the fruit also represents the fruit of good deeds—a reminder that faith should be reflected in the way we live.

Even 200 feet above the streets of Barcelona, Gaudí wanted every detail to carry meaning.

The colorful mosaics were created using trencadís, Gaudí's famous technique of broken ceramic and Venetian glass, allowing the fruit to sparkle differently as the Mediterranean sunlight changes throughout the day.

Many of the fruit pinnacles you see today were crafted by Japanese sculptor Etsuro Sotoo, who came to Barcelona in 1978 intending to stay briefly—and ended up dedicating his life to helping complete Gaudí's masterpiece.

Once you know the code, you'll never look at Sagrada Família's towers the same way again.
