We get asked quite often if we offer fertile eggs. The answer is no - we do not ever offer fertile eggs from our pens. Unfortunately there is no guarantee of fertility, hatch, gender or health as the factors that determine this are out of our control and whilst our birds are healthy and hatch healthy babies this health can be changed by humidity and temperature conditions. We breed for health, type, and temperament and grow our birds to a minimum of 3 months before offering them for sale. By doing this we guarantee gender, health, breed and quality including lineage. We understand that many people have fantastic hatch rates and so do we - sitting currently at 92%. This is still not enough to guarantee a fertile egg will hatch a perfect chick. In order to help those who wish to buy eggs elsewhere please know these things about fertile eggs.
Fertility expectations reduce daily once the egg is laid - yes they remain fertile for around ten days if kept in the right conditions but it is still reducing.
Congratulations on your 6 new roosters! If you buy 12 and are lucky enough to hatch 12 there is a very good chance you now own 6 Cockerels. Temperature, humidity and egg shape will not change this fact.
Posted eggs even those well packed have likely been bounced, stacked on and agitated at some point in their courier transition to you - this is not the sender's fault but is a condition that reduces the viability of the eggs by the time you receive them.
If you buy fertile eggs and only 8 out of 12 vein up as fertile this is what you should expect - not every pregnancy ends in a baby and not every egg ends in a chick being hatched. Once the egg is determined fertile there is no further onus on the person who provided you the egg - they are now your responsibility and what happens is determined by you, your incubator and your processes.
Did you know that a fertile egg kept under the wrong temperature and humidity can still sustain the first 7-10 days of life? However, after this the development may cease and the embryo may die or the chick may hatch and die within the first month of life due to internal abnormalities.
You can't just simply toss the eggs in any incubator and read the Chinese instructions that came with it. Successful hatching is far more complex than this and anything less than a complete understanding of incubation and development is going to be a gamble on success.
Also - there is absolutely no such thing as a show quality egg. There are eggs from show quality stock and champions but NOT show quality eggs. Despite what you are told no breeder can guarantee show quality from a yolk stage. Show quality comes from so many factors including feeds and training which are not able to be distinguished inside an egg. All of these factors are the reasons we do not and will not offer fertile eggs.
There are many who do and do so very successfully and if you are a Poultry enthusiast or just want a backyard flock and a hatch experience I can highly recommend a few people that we see do amazing things and produce nice rates. But it is just not for us.
