The biggest question…. pineapple on pizza? 🍍🍕

Our outdoor pizza oven was a last-minute decision after we kept looking at this dead space and ugly fence thinking, surely we can do better than that.

So we grabbed ourselves a pizza oven from (we’ve used them multiple times now) and it’s been the best decision ever.

Can’t wait for our next pizza party and of course, we’ll share it all with you.

WHAT STAGE ARE YOU AT? 😂

We have so many friends and family building right now and every second phone call starts with:

“Is this normal?!”

We like to refer to it as the stages of building.

Basically, whatever emotional spiral you’re currently in, it’s probably a stage. It will pass.
And then a new one will begin.

These are oversized cavity sliding doors and the panels actually slide completely into the wall cavity instead of stacking behind each other like standard sliders.

That’s what gives the fully open, seamless indoor-outdoor feel.

A few things to know before doing them:
~ They need to be planned very early in the design stage
~ The wall cavity has to be specifically designed to accommodate them
~ They’re extremely heavy
~ And yes, they are expensive

These ones are approximately 7.4m wide x 2.4m high with double glazing/toughened glass, so they’re definitely not your standard sliding doors.

But if you want that ‘completely disappears’ look, they’re honestly one of our favourite features in the home.

I’ve arrived home at night countless times before, but tonight was different.

The kids must’ve been playing with the switches and accidentally flicked the outside lights on. And wow. I had to stop for a minute and take it all in.

There’s something so special about seeing a home glowing like that at night.

Mechanical overhead cabinets are a must. They open and close at the touch of a button, which makes it so much easier for day to day use.

The details we always get asked about.

Every time we share the exterior of HAAUS.5 + HAAUS.6, the questions come in:
~ what colour is that?
~ is it timber?
~ what is the spacing between battens
~ what did you use on the garage?
~ what’s the cladding?
~ what’s around the balcony?

So here’s the quick breakdown:

We wanted the exterior to feel warm and coastal, but without committing to real timber maintenance, especially this close to the ocean.

Where to save vs where to spend: This is one thing we wouldn’t spend crazy amounts of money on again.

We upgraded ours in HAAUS.5 and while they looked great at first, in reality they stick, most are hard to turn on and off, some plates have fallen off the wall and we’re constantly fixing them.

And in reality, no one has ever walked into the house and said, “Wow, I love your light switches.”

Moving forward, we’d save the money and use the good old basic switches and put additional funds into more important things.

Dropped my phone. Chipped the floor.

Thank goodness we live in the era of very clever repair kits, colour matching and tiny fixes that save you from spiralling over one little mark.

A reminder that new homes still get lived in, floors still get chipped and sometimes the best design lesson is learning what can actually be repaired.
