We are absolutely thrilled to share our latest project Kooyong Classic, featured today in Est Living.

This circa 1920s home in the city’s inner east was in poor condition after years of alterations, including being divided into two separate dwellings. But architect Lucy Clemenger says its “beautiful bones” were still visible, and from the very first visit, she felt the home’s true character hadn’t faded. Its original face brickwork, arched openings, ceiling heights and period detailing were all features she sought to preserve, setting her on a path to “work with what was already there”.

Walking into Lucy Clemenger Architects’ renovated studio is like walking into your ultra-stylish yet very relaxed best friend’s house. Perched in a sun-drenched corner above the Prahran Market, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and artisan baked goods wafts up the stairs from the market stalls below.

The team chatter amongst themselves, lifting their heads to beam a smile. The organised creative chaos of the material samples library bursts at the seams with inspiration and ideas. And the touches of home, in the form of floor-to- ceiling linen curtains in various weights and shades are that much more lived in because some of them do, quite literally, come from Clemenger’s home. What better way to demonstrate to a client the extent to which texture and colour can change the feeling of a space and also demonstrate that not everything needs to be brand new. Not even in a new build. Conscious reuse can be and is very chic.

CARVED FROM A CORNER of Melbourne’s Prahran Market, Lucy Clemenger Architects’ new office is a celebration of light, colour and the power of collaboration. It’s also a fitting way to mark the company’s tenth birthday, as Lucy herself explains:

Working within the existing shell of the northeast corner of the Prahran Market, the renovation transforms the space into a light, colourful, warm and welcoming studio that reflects our approach to interiors while celebrating the original building. It’s a creative and collaborative workplace rather than a conventional office.

Colour, natural light, texture, furniture, art and lighting all contribute to an environment that feels comfortable and uplifting. The studio brings together pieces from many of our favourite Australian designers, suppliers and makers, creating a space that inspires our team every day.

The addition of new openings between rooms creates curated sightlines that integrate a significant art collection into the daily experience of the home.

This approach enhances the spatial flow and adds a decorative language to the restored Interwar villa.

Drawing particularly on Le Corbusier’s 1931 Architectural Polychromy, the interiors combine marbled stone, brass, walnut, colour and contemporary detailing.
