Compliance is one of the most underestimated parts of a commercial fitout.

It’s not just something to tick off at the end. It influences layout, door widths, circulation, accessibility, fire egress, services, and how the entire space is planned.

When compliance is considered too late, it usually leads to redesign, delays, and unnecessary cost.

We often see projects where layouts need to be reworked because door clearances don’t comply, travel distances exceed limits, or accessibility hasn’t been properly resolved.

Engaging a designer from the beginning means compliance is built into the design from day one, not forced in later.

It creates a smoother approval process, clearer documentation, and a space that actually works both on paper and in reality.

If you are planning a fitout, getting the right advice early will always save you time and money.

Have you ever had to change a design late in the process to meet compliance?

From a builder’s perspective, a good drawing set is not just about how a project looks. It is about how clearly it communicates intent.

Things that make a real difference:
- clear notes that are specific to the project
- dimensions that can be trusted
- coordination between plans, elevations and schedules
- consistent detailing
- no missing information

When drawings are clear, projects run smoother, pricing is more accurate, and site questions reduce.

It is one of the most valuable parts of the design process, even though it is rarely seen by the end user.

Builders, what do you wish designers did more of in their drawings?

One of the biggest risks in a project is assuming the existing space is accurate.

Plans are often outdated, services have been altered, and what looks simple on paper can be very different on site.

We regularly see:
• Rooms that have been built later that aren’t captured on the plans
• Scanned/scaled plans that aren’t accurate
• Areas that have been removed, demolished over the years

Verifying existing conditions early saves time, avoids rework, and protects the budget.
Have you ever uncovered something on site that completely changed the design?

One of the most interesting parts of commercial interior design is the gap between what a client asks for and what they actually need.

A common example is “we need more offices” when the real issue is lack of quiet focus space. Or “we need a bigger kitchen” when the problem is poor layout or lack of adequate seating.

Good design is about asking the right questions early and understanding how a space is used day to day, not just delivering exactly what’s requested.

The best outcomes come from solving the real problem, not just the brief on the surface.

Have you ever realised what you thought you needed was not actually the solution?

Starting a fitout?

Before you engage a builder or lock in design, make sure your brief is doing its job.

It should clearly define how your space needs to function, not just how it should look.

Not sure where to start? We can help.
