As our Kangaroo project comes together, the magic is beginning to reveal itself — so many little moments that make you pause and smile.

I believe a home should belong to its site, feel collected rather than assembled and always offer a little surprise. Here, colour, art, pattern and pieces gathered over time create something inviting, relaxed and distinctly individual.

The spectacular site was already unforgettable. Now the house is becoming its own enveloping hug.

This art-filled home is designed to do both: open right up for a crowd, then retreat into comfortable little nooks for a cocktail or the morning paper.

Generous colour, tactile fabrics and antiques are layered through the rooms almost as artworks themselves, sitting easily alongside the clients’ extensive collection.

The most interesting rooms often begin with what is already there
— a constraint, a history, a mood - and then build upon it.
At Crawford Place, the games room came with all three. Once an illegal gambling den, it had a wonderfully clandestine past that seemed worth preserving rather than polishing away.
A hidden pivot door in the panelling opens to piglet-pink walls, their warmth providing a rich backdrop for our books, art and collections. The low ceiling became an opportunity: I painted it with trompe l’oeil clouds, drawing on my early training in scenic art from my days designing sets and costumes.
The brilliant yellow carpet came from somewhere entirely different
— an installation I’d seen at Cockatoo Island during the Biennale of Sydney. I love the way an image or colour can stay with you, only to reappear years later in an unexpected place.
The result is a layering of memory, art, theatre and the history of the room itself. The gambling may have disappeared, but many guests have spent very long nights here having fun — so perhaps the spirit of the old place lives on. In an industry awash with white interiors, colour still has the power to seduce.
Here, washing the house in colour is only the beginning. Drawn from the surrounding landscape, these bold palettes set the scene for layers of art, furniture, pattern and texture - transforming not only how the rooms look, but how they feel.
Bedrooms become enveloping and cocooning. Hallways turn dramatic and sophisticated. Colour focuses the eye on the landscape beyond, while giving every piece within the room its own moment.
And then the entrance - wrapped in an exuberant Utopia Goods Australian botanical wallpaper. Less a hallway, more a declaration of intent.
