Unboxing new pieces is always fun, and this lighting fixture is no exception! 💡

This wasn't actually our first choice for the home it was purchased for. We'd originally gone with something more traditional (kind of hat-shaped).

The piece we really loved is made of felt, and since it's going into a kitchen, we got a little worried about it soaking up grease and moisture over time. So we kept looking, and found this one instead, named “Mr Magoo”.

Our client was drawn to the irregular shape and how soft it looks, and once it's lit up, it's going to bring so much warmth into the space! 😊

As an interior designer, site visits are KEY! When things come up on site (and they always do), we work hand in hand with the builder to solve problems quickly - all while protecting the design intent, staying on budget, and keeping the project on schedule. 📅

We almost had to demolish this wall…

During the cost-planning stage, we discovered that relocating the electrical board concealed within the wall would not be cost-effective, so the decision was made to retain it.

Keeping the wall meant our original door-entry design no longer met the required clearance. We’ve now adjusted the surrounding walls by approximately 50mm to ensure compliance. 👍

It’s a good example of how early cost planning can help identify potential issues and allow the design to be resolved before construction begins.

That’s a wrap on Saturday InDesign Sydney 2026! 🙌

A day filled with inspiring design, incredible energy, exciting new products, hands-on workshops, insightful talks… and plenty of laughter and catch-ups with industry friends.

Loved the atmosphere, the beautiful Sydney weather and seeing our design community come together. What a day! 🩷

The other day I was chatting with a friend, and she said something that stuck with me: she thought interior designers were more like decorators. They both play an important role, but there’s a distinct difference. 👇

I showed her an example from one of our projects - the drawings, the compliance notes, right down to the placement of power points. All of it has to be carefully selected, documented and executed. Then there's the project management, and the hours spent on site resolving whatever comes up!

We still do the pretty things, of course. But if I had to put it simply, interior designers shape the space, and decorators dress it. 🎨

The brief for this office kitchen came down to one goal: to create a warm and inviting space where the staff can collaborate and hangout. 😊

Here's how we're doing so:

- We're opening up the space and curving certain elements so it feels more open and welcoming.
- We're removing the existing cabinetry and putting in a big communal dining table instead.
- We're dressing it up with warmer tones and touches of green, wrapping timber veneer through the joinery and hiding the fridge.
- We're extending the kitchen into the neighbouring tenancy space, so it's bigger and properly caters to everyone working on that side of the building, too.

Construction is now underway - stay tuned to see the transformation! 🔨

This kitchen used to be a U-shape with no island, and for a house this size (5 beds, 4 baths), it just felt underwhelming.

Here’s how we’ve redesigned it to not only feel larger, but to ensure it’s a functional, tasteful space that suits our clients needs. 👇

1. We’re incorporating a freestanding island that stretches past where the old kitchen line ended, right into the space where we're relocating the dining table.
2. We’re using materials to wall the two areas off from each other, instead of building a physical wall. This separates the zones without closing the room in.
3. We’re also turning the old stair space into a full run of cabinetry in a light timber tone. It will house the fridge, conceal a hidden door to the newly added storage space under the stairs, and be home to a coffee bar with a wine fridge tucked underneath (something the client didn’t think was even possible to fit in the space.)

Construction is now underway, so stay tuned to see this new design come to life. 🔨

A good foyer doesn't need to be big. It needs to work.

Here's how we're redesigning this barristers' office foyer to maximise space, improve functionality and create a feeling that reflects the quality of the business. 😊

That’s a wrap on another busy week at Ambit Curator… site visits, design decisions, material selections, industry events, reformer breaks to reset the chaos, and cocktails and fine food to celebrate making it through. 👏🥳💪
