Working with clients on their recovery journey is incredibly rewarding, but it can also take a heavy toll. Vicarious trauma is a real risk for staff, and it's something we need to talk about more.

Thrilled to share that Kylie stepped out of her comfort zone and was a guest on the Architecture & Design podcast, hosted by Clémence Carayol!

In this powerful episode on trauma-informed design, she shares her personal story and introduces the Hope Hierarchy, our framework that translates psychological needs into practical design strategies.

It’s a must-listen conversation about how our environments can either trigger trauma or help us heal. Plus, Clémence's beautiful French accent is an extra treat!

What if we could prevent homelessness by rebuilding dignity and wellbeing?

This is the question that guides Kylie & I in our work at Design for Hope. We've seen firsthand how a well-designed, trauma-informed space can be a cornerstone of recovery, helping people find a safe path forward.

We partner with organisations to create beautiful, safe environments that allow people to heal and reclaim their lives. For us, every project is a step toward preventing homelessness and empowering individuals.

Before and After️.

At Design for Hope, our mission is to create spaces that restore dignity and promote the wellbeing of people who have experienced trauma in their lives.

During our most recent social impact project at Jeannie's (a shelter run by the wonderful team at Women’s & Girls’ Emergency Centre WAGEC) we used our Hope Hierarchy™️to understand what the residents needed from this room. Then we set about getting donations and partners such as Dulux and Luxaflex on board to create a space that is calming and welcoming, which is key to helping residents regulate their nervous system.

Your environment has a powerful impact on your health and wellbeing. This is the simple idea that started Design for Hope.

During our first social impact project at Erin’s Place, a shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence, we saw this idea come to life. We were finishing the dining room when one of the mothers shared how much the space meant to her and her son. Her words, '...not just for me, but so my son can see what a lovely home can be,' touched our hearts and became the inspiration for our mission.

We are so grateful for this work and the opportunity to help others feel a sense of worthiness through the power of design. ❤️

What does hope mean to you?

For many, it's a lifeline. For others, a distant dream.

Our new blog post, explores its profound role in healing from trauma. We break down the science and introduce an innovative framework for creating spaces that help hope emerge, take root, and grow.
