Behind every project are hundreds of decisions, site visits, samples, measurements, phone calls and problem-solving moments.

It’s exactly why I started Behind The Design.

To shine a light on everything that happens before the camera arrives.

The details matter. The measurements matter. The timing matters. It’s the work that happens behind the scenes that ultimately creates the spaces our clients get to enjoy every day.

It’s often the smallest styling moments that make a house feel like home.

The layered textures, the books left within reach, the warmth of timber, the way natural light falls across a space. Every piece is considered, not to fill a room, but to create a feeling.

This Central Coast home is a reminder that great design isn’t always about the big gestures. Sometimes it’s the finishing touches that bring a space to life.

One thing I’ve learnt as a designer is that you have to genuinely care about details most people will never notice.

Today we were on site watching Venetian plaster being applied.

To most people, it’s a wall.

To us, it’s the outcome of hundreds of decisions.

Not only what finish was selected, but how it would be applied, how it would interact with the light, how it would sit alongside every other material in the space, and how it would ultimately make our client feel.

The truth is, beautiful spaces don’t happen because of one big design decision.

They happen because of a thousand small ones.

The details that are discussed.The details that are documented.The details that are checked on site.

It’s easy to be passionate about the big reveal.

The real challenge is staying passionate about every step that gets you there.

A few moments we hadn’t shared from the retail fitout we designed down in Terrigal, Central Coast for .bridalstudio

Every detail in this space was considered to create a sense of calm, warmth and anticipation, giving brides a beautiful backdrop for one of life’s most memorable experiences.

The finishing layers play such an important role in shaping the mood and ambience of a space, and creating that feeling was exactly what our wonderful client envisioned.

Clients come to me with the same worries about natural stone, over and over. So I partnered with to address the five biggest ones. People hear “stone” and immediately think high maintenance, or something they need to be careful around. It’s actually the opposite. Natural stone is made to be lived with, not tiptoed around.

When it’s sealed and specified properly, it’s one of the most durable materials you can bring into a home. It softens over time. It settles in. It tells a story. If you’re looking for something that stays completely perfect forever, stone might not be your material. But if you’re open to something that evolves with your home, it’s a really beautiful choice.
