Newtown Neighbourhood Centre 🏡 From housing support to community connection, Newtown Neighbourhood Centre is here for people doing it tough.

Together, we’re building a fairer, more inclusive Inner West. 💛 Newtown Neighbourhood Centre (NNC) aims to build an inclusive, resilient, self-reliant and creative community. The Centre provides community support services to the local community and in particular the disadvantaged groups such as the aged, people with disabilities, people who are homeless, people with mental illness, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and people on low incomes.

Home isn’t just four walls. It’s the kettle you know by heart, the neighbour who waves, the place you finally exhale at the end of the day 🏠

Last year, 184 people in our community came close to losing that. A rent rise they couldn’t stretch to cover. A letter under the door they never saw coming. That quiet panic of not knowing who to tell.

Our team walked alongside every one of them, and helped them stay where they belong 💛

Art with Heart is TONIGHT! 🎨 Swipe for a sneak peek: ceramic stingrays, hand-woven bands, origami, paintings of Redfern and Country, and so much more.

Our artists come from all walks of life, including proud First Nations artists sharing stories of family, culture and Country. Some make art to get through hard times, others to stay connected to where they come from. Every piece has a story, and tonight you get to hear them.

It’s a beautiful chance to come down, meet the artists and support your community. You might even take a piece home 💛

When did you last make something just because? 🎨 A sketch on the back of a receipt. A playlist for a mate. A cake that came out a bit wonky.

Today is World Mental Health Day, and here’s what we’ve learned on Darley Street: making things and sharing them with other people is one of the quiet ways we look after ourselves. It’s how a lot of people find their way back to connection.

That’s what Art with Heart is all about. Come see it Monday 💛

We want NNC to feel like your second living room 💛 So we’ve added a few new favourites to the rotation, alongside some of the faithful regulars, and they’re all yours!

Come for a stretch, a paint, a walk-and-talk or a cuppa and a yarn. Bring a mate, or come solo and leave with a few new ones. All free, all welcome, no registration, no experience needed.

🧘 Yoga: every Saturday, 9–10am (BYO mat)

🎨 Art Club: 2nd and 4th Wednesday, 2–3pm. First session this Wed 14 Oct, all materials supplied!

☕ Men’s Group: first Wednesday of the month, 2–4pm (18+)

🚶 Active Neighbours: every Tuesday, 9:30–10:30am

Newtown, we’re turning the centre into a gallery for the night! 🎨💛

Art with Heart: Between Streets and Minds is our first community art fair. It brings together local artists, makers and storytellers from right here in our neighbourhood.

We’re holding it for World Mental Health Day because we see it every day: creativity is connection. Making something, sharing it, being seen. That stuff matters. Come browse, have a chat with the artists, and maybe take a piece home! Every artwork has a story behind it. Details below:

"That made us realise we could actually survive Year 7" 💛 That's one of our Peer Bridge students, and honestly, it's the whole point. As Year 6s across the Inner West start counting down to high school, Peer Bridge pairs them with high school mentors who've been there, done that and lived to tell the tale. They build trust, make new friends across the primary to high school divide, and have a good laugh along the way.

Now in its second year, the program has nearly doubled, from 69 students to 134, with Sydney Secondary College Leichhardt Campus, Annandale Public and Leichhardt Public all joining in. To every mentor, mentee, teacher and family who's been part of it this year: thank you. Year 7 isn't so scary after all 🎒

Rumour has it the seniors social groups have a better social calendar than the rest of us 🚌

Bus trips. Long lunches. Gallery visits, coastal walks, you name it. Our Seniors Social Groups get out and about most weeks, and the group chat energy is real.

Last year that added up to 17,726 hours of people over 60 spending time together instead of alone. Which is the whole point! The outings are just the excuse.

If you’re 60+ (or you’ve got a parent who keeps saying they’re “fine at home”), there’s a seat on the bus with your name on it. Call Alex on 0493 342 221 or drop by the Centre and we’ll find the group that fits 💛
