This lovely early to mid 20th century Chinese imperial yellow famille rose plate is a rare find, dating to an increasingly desirable period of Jingdezhen production.

Jingdezhen pieces have been hotly desired since the Ming Period, but after the Xinhai Revolution of 1911, production was disrupted throughout the 20rh century. As a result, large chargers like this one are relatively uncommon, particularly during the Early People’s Republic production period.

The thickly layered enamels here depict the intricate peony central motif and surrounding butterflies to great effect, as a lovely depiction in the famille rose style. As a final touch, the ruyi-shaped patterns signature to Jingdezhen enamels are here depicted as leafy tendrils.

The base is marked Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi - "Great Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period, Made”. Similar marks were used during the Guangxu Period up to the Early People’s Republic Period; this plate is likely circa 1950s, placing this in the early stage of the People’s Republic Period (1949-1966).

A lovely piece that is sure to increase in value.

Price marked at AUD$660.
Measurements: Approx 29.5cm diameter, 4cm high.
Light fade to glaze and wear commensurate with age as pictured, one or two areas of more significant wear. While the pattern and glaze is in excellent condition, the overall form of the plate is warped. While it still displays beautifully as a cabinet plate and is still of practical use, it does affect the overall balance to some extent as pictured.

“A leisurely time when women wore picture hats and did not vote, when the rich were not ashamed to live conspicuously, and the sun really never set on the British flag." ~Samuel Hynes.

This stunning George V monumental Hardy Brothers sterling silver epergne is an extraordinary piece to behold. These pieces represent the last heyday of the Belle Époque period, the sunset glamour of the Edwardian era before WWI began and the world changed.

All individual pieces are marked with the Hardy Brothers maker’s or assay mark. Hardy Brothers is one of the great names in Australian history when it comes to fine jewellery, silver and decorative arts. Their historic products are extremely collectible, and are held in state and national collections. It remains the only Australian jewellery business to hold a royal warrant and has produced the Melbourne Cup since 1980. Needless to say antique pieces from this maker, let alone one of such size and condition, are not just rare but excellent investment pieces.

With a delicately wrought base with three bowls, all bearing exquisite pierced details, this would make a lovely centre display for any table or home.

Price is marked at AUD$11,500.
Measurements: Approx 49 cm wide, 33cm high.
Weight:
Base 1220 grams
Bowls 1074 grams
Total weight 2294 grams.

Excellent antique condition. Light wear commensurate with age. No significant scratches, dents or damage.

Anton Chotka was a leading producer of cold-painted bronzes in Vienna from the late 19th to early 20th century. During its heyday Vienna had some of the greatest craftsmen in the world. Orientalism had inspired European artists since the 17th century, but the 1873 Vienna World’s Fair sparked a fresh craze in continental Europe for Egyptian and Moroccan art. Islamic-inspired art and bronzes were produced by Vienna’s greatest sculptors including Bergman and Chotka; this early 20th century bronze would be one of them.

Depicting a Bedouin rider astride his rearing horse, the colour palette of this piece is subdued as there has been paint loss, with remnants in blue, green and gilt imparting a subtle vitality. The quality of the bronze casting is exceptional, which is typical of Chotka and it is signed on the base. The windswept robes, leaning pose and rearing horse are all excellently depicted.

Price marked at AU$2250

Measurements: 17 by 10 base measurements, 17.5 cm high.

Condition: Good vintage condition with wear to base commensurate with age. Paint loss as aforementioned.

During our recent trip to Korea we had the pleasure of sourcing some fantastic Chinese ceramics, including these new old stock midcentury Jingdezhen ginger jars.
Possibly dating to the 60s to 70s, these are a highly unusual colour way, a larger size than we usually find in vintage ginger jars and are a matching pair.
They feature hand painted gold ruyi details on a black background and the Jingdezhen signature of handpainted enamels, here seen rendered as exquisite flowers in a heavy overglaze. A handpainted yunwen or leiwen border pattern to the lid and base completes the look, as do the gilt finials.
The apocryphal Qianlong reign mark in zhuangshu is one that was favoured in Jingdezhen circa the 60s to 70s. As always Jingdezhen is synonymous with the finest Chinese porcelain to be produced.
They are frankly fabulous pieces and would delight any collector of midcentury ceramics, ginger jars or Jingdezhen porcelain.

Price marked at AUD$1500 for the pair.
Measurements: Approx 25cm height, 14cm across at widest point.
Overall very good vintage condition. Some light wear to glaze, base and inside of lids commensurate with age. One area of wear to the base of the right hand side jar.

This really lovely 19th century High Victorian horn and sterling silver beaker has hallmarks for George Adams (Chawner and Co), London, 1872. This is a handsome piece and would make an excellent addition to a study, library or a well-heeled person’s barware collection. A monogram to the shield cartouche adds interest to what is already a statement piece. The glass lined bottom is in excellent condition.
A son-in-law of the renowned Chawner silversmithing family, George Adams proved himself to be an excellent steward of the family fortunes; their pattern book of 1875 is considered a definitive resource in Victorian silver patterns.

Price marked at AUD$600.
Measurements: 14 cm high, 8cm opening dia.
Condition: Very good condition; a few hairline scratches to the sterling silver mounts and some light wear to the horn commensurate with age. No cracks or major issues to note.

Beautiful vintage Japanese bronze vase signed with what is most likely 永青 or Eisei; little could be found about this maker but it is a remarkably elegant piece with a lovely silhouette.

Certainly a lovely piece and sure to charm any collector of Japanese art; this would look lovely with a single stem of orchid, perhaps ikebana style. In excellent vintage condition.

Height of vase approximately 20 cm, diameter approximately 12.5 cm.

Price marked at $660 AUD.

This antique George V pique and sterling silver jewellery casket is a lovely and practical piece.
Featuring silver inlay on tortoiseshell, jewellers at the time took advantage of tortoiseshell’s excellent thermoplastic properties to create some beautiful “natural celluloid” pieces. In the 19th century, sailors often used tortoises and sea turtle as provisions, and their shells were natural byproducts that soon became prized in their own right. Lined in velvet, this would still be an excellent display piece and for storing jewellery, cufflinks and other treasured pieces.

Marks for Henry Matthews who was active in 1894-1930, Birmingham, 1914.

Price marked at $700 AUD
Measurements: 5.5 cm high, 10cm diameter.
Overall very good antique condition. Silver frame is in excellent condition. Some clouding and surface scratches to the tortoiseshell, but no chips or splits to note. Some wear to velvet as pictured.

21/09/2023

This rare and beautiful tartanware box was made likely circa 1880s as a souvenir item commemorating Robert Burns, who was known then and now as Scotland’s national poet. The town of Mauchline, much famed for its “treen” wares, was a popular Victorian tourist destination as it was where Burns lived and composed much of his work. Burns was known as “The Scottish Bard” and the caption on this box “Scotia’s Immortal Bard” likely refers to the eponymous book written by Robert Grant in 1884, which was a biography of the much lauded poet.
After Prince Albert purchased Balmoral in 1852, a revival of the Scottish Highlands craze swept Victorian Britain, sparking a new craze among domestic tourists. Among the souvenir items available back then was tartanware, which was produced in the Scottish town of Mauchline during the 19th century.
Local sycamore trees were used to make small wooden “treen” everyday objects, then tartan paper would be applied (i.e. “transferred”) and heavily varnished.
Tartanware was continuously popular up until 1933, when production ceased due to a factory fire. However, these charming antique pieces remain en vogue even in the present.
This particular piece was a thread holder and sewing reel box; the small holes on the side would be used to keep the thread ends separate from each other. Crisp tartan pattern inlay in the Stuart clan pattern.
Price marked at $480 AUD. This is a particularly rare piece; we have found no other examples online of this particular piece.
Measurements: 5cm height, 10 diameter.
Good antique condition with wear as pictured commensurate with age; clearly a treasured piece, there is nevertheless wear to the transfer portrait and to the box. Overall still an extremely rare, desirable and collectable piece.

A mid to late 19th century tartanware stamp box, decoupaged with a quirky Victorian Penny Red Stamp. The Penny Red stamp succeeded the Penny Black stamp in 1841 and was in circulation until 1879 which places the box within this time period. Perfect for small trinkets or keepsakes. Inlay is in good condition. This combination of tartanware and decoupage is very desirable with one other example we found priced at £180 excluding shipping and VAT

A classic pattern in the McDuff clan tartan.

Price marked at $300 AUD.

Measurements: 4.5 diameter, 2cm height.

Condition: Good antique condition with some wear as pictured commensurate with age. Stamp somewhat faded as is typical of delicate stamp paper from this era when decoupaged.

This lovely .800 silver chalice is likely Continental European in origin and circa early to mid 20th century.

A lovely classic twin handled lidded chalice with scroll finials and beaded edging; the granulation work suggests inspiration from Etruscan metalwork which enjoyed a revival in the 19th to 20th centuries.

Price marked at AU$600.

Weight: 135grams

Measurements: 9.5 diameter, 14cm across, approx 12.5 cm high.

Condition: One slight dent to inner rim of lid. Not visible when on chalice. Otherwise very good antique condition with only slight wear commensurate with age.
