A R T & D E S I G N

One of my favourite contemporary artists, Northern Beaches local Michael Muir, shared some fascinating insights into his exhibition at Manly Art Gallery & Museum on Saturday.

I’ve followed his work for years, watching it grow bolder and more distinctive. Those pink trees are hard to forget! One vivid purple tree marked the moment he stepped beyond conventional reality to create something entirely his own.

His urban landscapes feel distinctly architectural, playing with perspective, geometry and the relationships between buildings, trees and people, with colour guiding your eye around the canvas.

My favourite story: his early studio was dark and poorly lit, so he began using brighter colours. A practical fix became his signature style. Sometimes the best design decisions come from unexpected constraints!

Bold, playful and a delight to behold. Well worth a trip to Manly. Manly Art Gallery & Museum

An update on our Fairlight Project.

Things have moved along at a good pace since our last post. The roof is now well and truly on, internal linings are going in and the external render is starting to take shape.

It’s great to watch the project transform from drawings and ideas into a home. A big credit to the team at Shelter Building Projects for their hard work and attention to detail in bringing it all together.

Saturday Indesign Sydney was back this year, sun out and doors wide open across the city's showrooms. There's nothing like the energy of the Sydney design community out in force.

First stop was Euroluce and tappeti fine crafted rugs + carpets , those rugs! And the Vibia lighting range stopped us in our tracks, beautiful stuff. From there it was over to Oxford Street to meet the team from Miss Amara at their very first physical pop-up. Then a well-timed pick-me-up at Jardan , gelato and sparkles, thanks Jardan, much appreciated.

Further up Oxford Street we caught up with the magnetic Anton Assaad at Great Dane, who gave us a personal tour of his new venture, Hästens Beds Official handcrafted beds built to last a lifetime. I can't tell you enough how comfortable these beds were. Stunning.

We also booked into Muuto 's immersive Soundscape audio experience, exploring neuroaesthetics, a fascinating look at how sound and space shape the way we feel. Great to meet David Mansfield, who guided us through it.

Still not ready to call it a day, we squeezed in one more stop at Winning Appliances , catching the tail end of mikehewson 's talk. The always entertaining Mike brings sharp insight on design, procurement and risk, delivered with his trademark Kiwi humour.

A cracking day soaking up brilliant design, warm company and hospitality that never let up. Huge thanks to everyone who pulls this event together year after year, to the showrooms who opened their doors, and to Sarah Bickford for the company on the day.

If you missed it this year, pencil in the next one, Melbourne if you're up for a road trip, or Sydney again in 2028.

I don't often find myself in Parramatta, but on Saturday I ventured west for the inaugural Parramatta Open, a one-day architectural and heritage event from Museums of History NSW and the first-ever satellite of Sydney Open.

Parramatta Aquatic Centre, by Andrew Burges Architects with Grimshaw and McGregor Coxall, was a highlight, a circular oculus pool sunk into Mays Hill to protect heritage sightlines, with an elevated promenade framing the view. Architecture-school theory, realised at full scale.

PHIVE, the award-winning civic hub and library by Manuelle Gautrand with DesignInc and Lacoste + Stevenson, had me sceptical at first (I'm not a massive colour fan), but its faceted red panelling is genuinely clever design, filtering light and anchoring the new civic square.

Also ticked off 6 & 8 Parramatta Square, Leigh Memorial Church, the restored Parramatta Town Hall, St John's Anglican Cathedral (the country's oldest continuously used church site) and the Sydney West Trial Courts.

Missed the golden ticket ballot for a preview of Powerhouse Parramatta, the $915 million museum opening this November, so I'll be back for that.

A great initiative, and a great excuse to get out west. Thanks to Museums of History NSW , the volunteers, and partners the NSW Architects Registration Board , GANSW – Government Architect NSW and City of Parramatta

Parramatta is changing fast, setting its sights on becoming the centre of Sydney, geographically and culturally. Bring it on!

What a delight to hear Isabella Leber speak last night at Brickworks' inDETAIL International event.

Isabella shared insights from her Munich-based practice, Pool Leber Architects, and the way geometry drives their earliest conceptual thinking, with historical resonance, context and orientation shaping every project from day one.

The talk moved across three areas of the practice's work: villas, existing buildings and public buildings. What struck me most was the consistency, smaller projects get the same care and attention as the big ones.

Nights like this remind me exactly why I love architecture. Hearing someone speak about the connection between history, place and people, and what that means for design and community, is always a privilege.

Thank you to Brickworks Building Products for another brilliant event, and to Isabella Leber for making the trip from Germany and so generously sharing her time and insight.

Remembering Professor Adrian Gale, who passed away on 27 July.

Adrian led the School of Architecture at Plymouth University, graduated from the AA's renowned 1950 cohort, and worked alongside Mies van der Rohe in Chicago in the late '50s.

He had an amazing presence, he lit up a room the moment he walked in, and a teaching style that pushed you to seek simplicity with rigour and think about design as a whole.

His reputation brought some of Britain's greatest architects, Richard Rogers, Nicholas Grimshaw, Ted Cullinan, through our studio doors.

Even years after leaving "The White School of the West," his influence never left us.

A memorial service is being held in his honour — adriangale.muchloved.com
