The incredibly talented Interior Designer, Danielle Brustman, has gone all in, painted the walls red and transformed her studio into the Superhot Shop for Melbourne Design Week 2026. I chatted with Danielle on our podcast last month about the event that’s part pop-up, part-exhibition, part-event space and of course, part-shop. There’s over 60 artists, designers and artisans all delivering to the brief - do what you want, but make it hot. Hot mess, hot flush, hot rod, hot stuff, what’s hot and what’s not. Superhot Shop is open every day until May 24.

“Good design isn’t ‘that’s nice’. It’s wow.”
In this episode of Lex Talk Design, I sat down with Artist / Designer Avalana Simpson. Her definition of good design? It has to make you feel something. Whether it’s the colours pulling you in, a large-scale composition your eyes can’t stop travelling across, or a visual moment that sparks a debate, good design stops you and shows you where the magic lives đŸ€©

Before this space was Milligram’s Newtown store, on our first visit we could see the ceiling was already telling a story. Exposed beams, heating ducts and services ran every which way but loose throughout the whole site. It was the kind of chaos most store design’s flatten to forget.

But rather than immediately plan to smooth it over, we sat still and listened. We spent time thinking about how could we bring the honest history of the building together with Milligram, a brand that celebrates creative tools and revels in the finer details.

Instead of erasing the clunky ceiling, we chose add to it. Lengths of felt, woven through timber frames, now stretch from one end of the store to the other. They create a suspended canopy that softens the edges, and warms the feeling of the store.

This is the part of retail design we love most: the moment you realise a store doesn’t need to be smoothed-over into submission to feel considered. The best site-store design works with what’s already there, and then adds to the story.

Sometimes to get the big thing done, it feels like you’ve got to roundhouse on it, but really the opposite is true. To get the big thing done, you need to chip away at it, consistently, bit by bit. Artist, muralist and author, Kyle Hughes-Odgers, shares his daily routine that fuels the creating his work, from his studio pieces to the huge outdoor murals.

A night out at ICONICA - Sydney’s architecture and design exhibition. Maybe it was because there were a lot of new products on show, or because we love to leave our studios and catch-up face to face? Or a combination of both. But the big turn-out is a healthy sign that our industry loves to learn (and that we love a chat!). Thanks for having us
