THE ART OF LAYERING | a room that feels finished isn’t just well-furnished, it’s built in layers, and there’s a sequence to it that makes all the difference.

My latest blog post walks through exactly how to approach it, from the foundation decisions nobody notices to the organic elements you add last. Including why wallpaper can work as a texture rather than a statement, and why the editing matters just as much as the adding.

ENTRY | this hallway and stairwell is proof that transitional spaces deserve just as much attention as the rooms themselves.

In this 1920s Mosman home, the stairwell became a moment in its own right. A dramatic terracotta wallpaper wraps the space, paired with oak flooring and the original curved banisters painted matt black to tie back to the kitchen joinery.

Brass wall light and accents add warmth and continue the thread carried throughout the home.

Layered, warm and welcoming from the moment you walk through the door 🤎

KITCHEN | matt black joinery, terrazzo and warm oak layered together to create this beautiful kitchen that feels refined but still relaxed enough to suit the home.

The oversized terazzo island bench was a natural choice for this 1920s home renovation ~ subtly referencing the original terrazzo in the home while bringing texture and softness to the darker palette.

Finished with brass accents and oversized pendants, the space feels moody and sophisticated while still being incredibly practical for busy family life 🖤

DO I NEED A DESIGNER?

Often, clients come to me after the decisions have been made - the sofa that feels too large once it’s in the room, the paint colour that reads completely different to the swatch, or a layout that simply doesn’t flow the way they imagined.

And while all of these things can usually be fixed, thoughtful planning earlier in the process almost always leads to less chaos and a more considered result.

I’ve shared more thoughts on this in my latest blog post, including when I believe it’s actually worth bringing a designer in.

RETREAT | this parents’ retreat came together beautifully, guided by a shared vision and a client who trusted the process.

Deep teal grasscloth walls, a felted wool headboard, custom made to fit a tight space, layered with linen, rattan, a mix of timbers and chunky sisal underfoot ~ all working together to create a space that feels cocooning and perfectly restful 🤎

HELLO | a rare moment in front of the camera 🫣 I’m Emily, founder of The Style Workshop, designing homes for over 17 years, and quietly much longer before that.

My design ethos has always been about creating homes that feel collected rather than styled and spaces that are liveable, with a bit of imperfection, and layered over time. I also love the process of renovating older homes - taking something with potential, respecting its heritage and turning it back into something truly special.

A little bit more about me..

~ I love a good vintage find, FB Marketplace is both a blessing and a slight obsession 😅
~ Fresh flowers are essential, not optional
~ Lighting is the unsung hero of every room (lamps always)
~ Travel is a constant source of inspiration (I’m always noticing materials, spaces, details everywhere I go…)
~ And, I’m constantly rearranging furniture in my head…!!

Here I share a mix of projects, inspiration and the in-between - thanks for following along 🤎

CLASSIC | marble herringbone, forever a favourite 🩶

In the master ensuite at our Cremorne Point project, a restrained palette allows the texture and monochrome colour palette to quietly shine.
