Most people see this floor from about a metre up, with a menu in their hand.

From there you're not taking in the whole room. You're looking at the oak beside your chair leg, the edge of the table and the gap to the next one.

So that's the part that has to look good up close. At Nobu the floor is Natural from our Milano Collection, finished in a matt lacquer so the lights don't bounce off it.

Treetops, the North Sydney skyline, and one oak floor from the lift to the living room.

Neutral Bay Apartment is one of eight homes Mathieson designed on a sloping site. Each home sits on one level. You step out of a private lift and walk west. The kitchen, dining and living rooms are at that end, looking across a green gully to the city.

Mathieson wanted an apartment that feels like a house. A lot of that is the planning. Some of it is a short list of materials. Dark stained oak joinery, soft grey Turkish marble, limestone in the bathrooms, and pale oak on the floor.

They chose the same oak for every room, and we supplied it. So you can walk from the lift to the far window and the floor never changes.

Mathieson did the architecture, interiors, furniture and styling. The pieces are from Fanuli and the art is through Artbank. Thanks to Ariel and the Mathieson team, and to Dave Wheeler for the photos.

It takes two of us to carry one of these boards.

Each one is 4 metres long and 320mm wide. You don't pick it up and swing it round a doorway on your own.

Laying them takes patience too. With a board this long, a tiny angle at one end turns into a gap you can see at the other. So the first row goes down slowly and carefully, and every row after it follows that line. [CONFIRM with Chris: two people per board, and the first row is set out this way]

It's slower going than a standard board. A big room can end up only twenty or so boards across.

The photos only show the finished house, so we thought we'd tell you about the carrying.

On a Friday night, almost nobody at Penrith RSL is looking at the floor. We're fine with that.

People come here for dinner, a drink or a catch-up with friends. They won't stop to ask what the timber is. But they'll feel the difference between a room that's warm and one that isn't, even if they couldn't tell you why.

A club floor gets photographed once, on opening day. After that it belongs to the regulars, who'll walk across it every week for years.

That's who we had in mind here.

Back in March we showed you the timber ceiling in this Castle Cove house. We didn't say much about the floor.

That was partly the point. With oak overhead, concrete walls and a lot of glass, the house already has plenty going on. The floor needed to sit quietly underneath and let all of that lead.

It's Rock Wash, a pale, cool oak that runs through the kitchen, the hallway and the living room. The hallway is the shot we keep coming back to: plaster on one side, concrete on the other, and a long run of pale boards out to the window.

Near black joinery, veined marble, and the palest thing in the room is the floor.

Timber usually turns up as the warm thing in a room. Something to soften white walls and hard surfaces.

Here it does the opposite. The joinery is dark, the stone is heavily veined, the furniture sits in deep blues and greys. Against all of that, the floor is the lightest thing in the room, and the one carrying daylight from the harbour windows back into the space.

That changes what the floor is for. Not warmth. Ground. An even, pale floor that lets a dark scheme sit on top of it without the room closing in.

The restraint is in the tone, not the material. Same European Oak, chosen pale rather than mid brown.

Most finishes decide the colour. Natural leaves it to the oak.

A wash cools the timber. A stain deepens it. A smoked finish takes it darker again. Each is a decision made on top of the oak, and the right one when a scheme calls for it.

Natural is the decision not to. What comes through is the oak's own colour, which is never quite one colour: a little warmer in one block, paler in the next, with the grain running clearly through all of it.

Herringbone shows it off. From across this living room the floor reads as one soft, even tone. Up close, no two blocks are quite the same.

It suits a room that already has plenty to say. Art on the wall, a deep blue armchair, brass overhead. The floor does not need to add another colour. It only has to be oak.

The pattern is standard. The board is not.

At a standard board size, a run this long puts the point of the V in front of you again and again between the island and the far wall. Past a certain count the pattern stops reading as architecture and starts reading as texture.

Enlarging the board changes the count, not the pattern. Fewer points across the same distance, longer uninterrupted lines, and a geometry calm enough to sit under a stone island and a full wall of joinery without arguing with either.

The timber is set into stone with a mitred border, so the floor draws its own room inside the plan. At this size the pattern has the length it needs to resolve before it reaches an edge.

Scale is the part of a pattern floor that gets specified last and noticed first.

There is no skirting in this room.

The stone runs all the way down and becomes the base. Which means the floor has nowhere to hide, and every cut along that curve is the line you are left with.

Most floors are laid with a few millimetres of tolerance around the perimeter, then covered by a skirting or a scotia. Take those away and the tolerance goes with them. The board has to meet stone that was cut, polished and set before we arrived, and hold a consistent line the whole way round.

Which is why the first photos here are of a bare slab covered in pink crayon. Every junction was drawn and checked on the concrete, then a single board was laid against the stone to read the run, before anything was fixed.

Praga carries the rest. A smoky mid brown across 220mm European Oak, warm enough to sit beside pale stone without ever competing with it.

The stone was always going to be the thing you notice. The floor's job was to make sure none of it looked difficult.

A city at 1:200, under a circular skylight.

Look at what is actually in this room. The building is a model. The view is a photograph. The apartment is a render on a wall. Every surface here is standing in for something that does not exist yet.

Except one. The floor is the only material in the room at full size, in the real thing, doing what it will actually do.

Which makes it the only honest sample in the building. Someone walks in, and before they have read a single board or asked a single question, they have already felt the one finish that is not a representation.
