Did you know the Dingo / Wild Dog Barrier Fence was originally built in the 1880’s to stop the spread of the rabbit plague across State borders?

This proved to be a wasted effort and the fences fell into disrepair. In 1948 it was proposed the fence be repaired and maintained to protect sheep from wild dog attacks, and in the late 1950's the Wild Dog (Dingo) Barrier Fence was born!

Today, the Queensland section of the Wild Dog Barrier Fence is about 2,500 km long and protects 26.5 million hectares of sheep and cattle grazing country.

Much of the state border between New South Wales and Queensland also takes the form of a Barrier Fence. You can check out the Fence for yourself at Cameron Corner, and even cross the Fence through the border gate!

Thargomindah's Cobb & Co Crossing🐴

The Stone Cobb & Co Crossing was the main access
into town across the Bulloo River before the bridges
were built in 1929.

During the 1890's, Thargomindah became the home for Cobb & Co Coaches to service all the distant settlements of Hungerford, Wompah, Oontoo, Kyabra
and Toompine.
The trip by stagecoach from Thargomindah to Cunnamulla, at the time was 150 miles, would take 5-6 days, on a good dry road!

If you feel the roads are a bit ordinary now, it was
definitely no bed of roses back in the day of Coach
Travel. The worst feature of coach travel was the
discomfort of travelling long hours in extreme cold or
heat seated on top of the Coach. Even an inside seat
was no guarantee of comfort. For the outside
passengers, overhanging trees were a health hazard
🌳

You can check out the remains of the Cobb & Co
Crossing along the Bulloo River as you come into
Thargomindah from the East!
