John Constable, Cloud Study, 1822.
John Constable undertook an intensive study of clouds and the sky, working primarily over Hampstead Heath.
In this particular work, Cloud Study, the inscription notes the time as between 11 o’clock and noon, suggesting the piece was completed within a single hour.
Constable’s energetic brushwork, subtle tonal variations, and keen understanding of cloud structure and movement enabled him to convey atmosphere and mood with remarkable sensitivity.
