Project Progress Spotlight: View Pavilion | Redwood, Toowoomba

Our View Pavilion project in Redwood is beginning to reveal its defining architectural gesture. Carefully designed and orientated to capture sweeping views across the Border Ranges, the extension cantilevers beyond the existing dwelling, creating a dramatic connection to the landscape and horizon beyond.

As construction progresses, the relationship between the pavilion and its setting is becoming increasingly apparent. Working with the site's natural topography, the design uses softened battered embankments to support the architecture, ensuring the focus remains on the experience of the view.

Angel, Phoebe, Mike and Tess attended the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce Business at Dusk event last week at the newly-opened Museum of Health with the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation

What an interesting and beautiful venue! We loved the outdoor amphitheatre and the fascinating history displayed in the Museum. It’s a lovely location which we are sure will attract lots of visitors, especially when the new hospital opens.

Thanks for having us Toowoomba Hospital Foundation - we had a great time!

We made a visit recently to the University of Southern Queensland - Australia Art Gallery to view an exhibition of works by .luscombe.art - Light and Shade.

Melinda's collection is called Gumbi Gumbi and is a series of acrylic on canvas works.

Indigenous art often signifies a deep connection to the land, reflecting the artist's spiritual and cultural ties to their ancestral territories. Luscombe employs a diverse range of symbols and techniques to capture the Gumbi Gumbi Gardens through a collective montage of imagery spanning all seasons, showing the gardens as the plants grow and mature. This work is about looking towards the future of the Gardens, not just how they exist in the present.

The subtle background which moves across the canvas illustrates symbols of water, rainfall, stars and sun representing both night and day. Soil, country and rainbows, complemented with eucalyptus and grass, all connected by meeting places, bridged by tracks in the earth.

The plants on the surface, emblazoned in white, are all found within the Gumbi Gumbi Gardens, ranging from Orange Blossoms, Rosella, Wombat Berry, Gumbi Gumbi, Winter Apple, Kurrajong leaves and seed pods, Bunya pine fronds and Bunya Nuts.

We are excited to be partnering with University of Southern Queensland - Australia First Nations team developing a richer cultural presence across their Campuses and look forward to sharing more as these projects progress.

Always on the lookout for inspiring design and creativity, Tess recently visited The Red Dress exhibit at the Museum of Brisbane

A 14-year global collaborative embroidery project, The Red Dress was conceived by British artist Kirstie Macleod to provide a platform for individuals—especially women in vulnerable situations—to tell their stories through embroidery.

From 2009 to 2023, the dress travelled the world, embroidered by 367 women, 11 men, and two non-binary artists from 51 countries. Constructed from 87 panels of burgundy silk dupion, it holds a Guinness World Record for the largest collaborative embroidery project.

Every thread carries a story. The dress includes contributions from refugees, asylum seekers, survivors of war, and disadvantaged women across the globe, with all commissioned embroiderers compensated. It also features Lambani embroidery from southern India, gathered by Kirstie in 2002, which inspired the project.

The exhibit is on until 13 September and if you have a chance you must try and see it. It’s an emotive and inspiring reminder of humanity and hope brought to life by real people ❤️

Last week Tess, Phoebe and Dominique attended Sightline, an annual event with Dana Tomić Hughes of Yellowtrace.

Rather than another rundown of "what's hot right now," Sightline is about understanding the bigger forces shaping design and why they matter. A morning of independent thinking in a very noisy industry.

Investing time in attending events like this is part of how we do business at Feather & Lawry. Staying close to what's actually shaping the industry, not just what's trending this week, means we can bring sharper thinking and better ideas to the work we do for our clients.
