𝗬𝗮𝗯𝘂 𝗚𝘂𝗴𝗮𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘀 (𝗡𝗔𝗙𝗔) 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

For the Wulgurukaba people of Gurambilbarra and Yunbenun (Townsville and Magnetic Island), Yabu Gugay is a sunrise gathering that brings people together through song, story, dance and connection to Country.

On Saturday 26 September, acclaimed Numburindi songmen 𝗡𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗺𝗶𝘆𝗮 𝗡𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘆𝘂𝗿𝗿𝘆𝘂𝗿𝗿 𝗡𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮 from Arnhem Land will join Wulgurukaba Traditional Custodians and 𝗪𝘂𝗹𝗴𝘂𝗿𝘂𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗮 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀 to share a powerful celebration of culture, community and spirit.

This week we welcome 𝗥𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗰𝗮 𝗝𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻 to Dancenorth as part of our 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀 (𝗔.𝗥.𝗧.) 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺.

Rebecca is a dancer, choreographer and teacher, born in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) in 1988 and based in Naarm. Her work spans theatres, galleries and unconventional spaces, alongside participatory projects and video. She works through dance, utilising its equally speculative and practical qualities to encourage reflection, connection and transformation.

Her work has been presented at Tempo Festival (2019, 2024), Nelson Arts Festival (2024), FRAME Biennale (2023), INDANCE Sydney Dance Company (2025), Kier Choreographic Award (2016, 2022), Front Beach Back Beach (2022), CONTACT HIGH, Gertrude Glasshouse (2021) and PAGEANT New York (2025), Blindside Gallery (2021), College Dance, La Biennale di Venezia (2018) and Dance Massive (2015, 2017). With Sarah Aiken she has co-directed participatory dance project Deep Soulful Sweats, presented across Australia and internationally since 2013.

Rebecca has worked extensively as a performer with choreographers including Jo Lloyd, Lucy Guerin Inc, Shelley Lasica, Harrison Ritchie Jones, Lee Serle, Sandra Parker and Adam Linder. She is a DanceWEB scholar (2015), Australia Council Cité internationale des arts resident (2020), former Resident Director of Lucy Guerin Inc (2023), and a Gertrude Contemporary Studio Artist (2024–26).

Inspired by the works of some of the Renaissance’s most celebrated artists, including Rembrandt, Botticelli and Michelangelo, Sleepless Ones delves into the emotions, gestures and human drama captured within their iconic paintings.

Some images from raymond d. blanco’s recent residency at Dancenorth.

In collaboration with BlakDance, raymond returned to his birthplace of Gurambilbarra (Townsville) to develop his new work ‘Project blanco: What We Carry Forward’.

Our upcoming season of 𝙎𝙡𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙊𝙣𝙚𝙨 has been developed over three years, through the artist development residency called The Whole Thing - a part of Regional Gravitation.

𝙎𝙡𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙊𝙣𝙚𝙨’ creator, Michelle Heaven has worked with the Dancenorth Ensemble each year since 2024 in preparation for its premiere season. Together, Michelle and our dancers have explored the richness of Renaissance paintings, unpacking the intense emotion, epic themes and detailed imagery that have rendered them timeless.

Zane Saunders will debut his new work ‘Preface’ at PUNQ (Pop-Up North Queensland) Festival this 8-10 October.

In this major new performance installation, Jarrowia, Butchulla and Gunggari artist Zane Saunders explores the tensions between Indigenous knowledge, spirituality and colonial narratives.

Set within the old Bank of NSW building, ‘Preface' combines live performance, sculpture, sound and video to create an immersive experience that invites audiences into a deeply personal realm of ritual, spirituality and reflection, where questions linger long after the performance ends.

Zane has been following the threads of these enquiries for many years, including during annual creative residencies at Dancenorth over the last nine years. It is a privilege to join PUNQ and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in supporting Zane to premiere this latest manifestation of his work.

Earlier this year, we were awarded potentially life-saving funding through the Port of Townsville Limited's Community Fund to purchase two automated external defibrillator (AED) bundles – one to live permanently in the Dancenorth building, and one portable kit to take with us when our Ensemble tours; when we deliver workshops across regional, rural and remote Australia; and when we present site-specific works.

The purchase of these AEDs means we can continue to provide safe and inclusive dance experiences across all of our communities, and for a range of participants including mature movers, people affected by Parkinsons, people who are d/Deaf or living with disability, young people in regional, rural and remote areas; FIFO and shift workers; and people with low or no income.

Alison Currie joined us for a two-week A.R.T. residency in June.

Alison’s choreographic practice explores sculptural forms, found objects and environments in relation to performer, place, and the system of consumption.

During her residency, Alison began developing a new site-specific performance project, which she envisages presenting in gallery settings. Her unfolding process included scouring the surrounding environment for discarded objects to become the heroes of her work - firstly placing them on display as artefacts, and then exploring their potential within a performance.

Alison spotlighted the chronology of waste, prompting us to consider where an item's lifecycle ‘begins’ and ‘ends’, and our own role in determining an object’s value.

Three of our Teaching Artists have recently completed training to support the continuation of our Vital Dance classes for people affected by Parkinson’s Disease (PD).

Congratulations, Bella Hood, Miranda Zeller and Caitlin Halmarick who are now certified facilitators of the global Dance for PD Program.

The training has equipped Bella, Miranda and Caitlin with new ways to bring the joy of dance into the studio – not only in our Vital Dance classes, but in all of our Community Experience offerings.

It makes our hearts soar to know that our Vital Dance classes can offer people living with PD a chance to discover new movement pathways and feel embodied and joyous, no matter how severe their condition is. Participants can complete the whole class seated if they prefer; and carers and support workers are also welcome to join in.
