At our first meeting, we'll ask some odd questions. Do you collect hats or watches? What do you hang in the laundry? Where do you store your mop and vacuum?

The answers end up shaping the design. Here are four things clients told us that are now built into their homes.

What's the one thing in your house that still doesn't have a proper home?

Wall cladding is a simple way to change the whole feel of a room before you've even furnished it.

Timber for warmth. Painted for a subtle texture change. Batten profiles for rhythm and shadow line. Curved for something softer, especially around a large surface.

It's a choice, not an after thought.

Colour is the decision people put off longest, and the one that ages a kitchen or bathroom fastest.

White gets you safe. It doesn't get you interesting.

We're seeing clients lean into colour again: deep green subway tiles, soft pinks with variation, pale blues in interesting lay patterns. It's about picking something you'll still love in ten years.

If you've been in the studio since June, you've probably already met Lisa.

We are excited to have her onboard as our design assistant and consultant, helping keep the office running smoothly. Originally from the UK, she brings an interior design degree, 13 years of working in the Australian building industry, and a cabinet maker's eye for what holds up in a working kitchen.

She looks after our client communications, samples and documentation, as well as co-ordinating the pieces you'll find through Ethos Found. She's also already helped a few clients with some colour consultations, with a five-star review to show for it.

Welcome to the team, Lisa!

A makeup desk works harder than people think.

Storage decides whether it stays tidy or turns into a dumping ground: drawers for the daily stuff, closed cabinetry for the rest. Colour sets the mood, from soft off-white tones to deeper timber for something moodier. Mirror choice changes the whole feel too, a round mirror softens a space, a rectangular one brings more structure.

You know exactly what you want. You just don't always know what it's called or how to achieve the look.

That gap is where good kitchens fall apart: the right idea meets the wrong specification, and your cabinet maker builds something close, but not quite it. These are the actual products behind the details you'e seen in our work.

Save this for your next cabinetry meeting or send to a friend.

A white kitchen often gets called "safe" or "boring". Done properly, it becomes a strong anchor for everything else in the room.

Here, blackbutt timber flooring does the grounding, with the fluted island and splashback bringing shape and texture against all the flat white cabinets. That combination is why this space never feels clinical or cold.

Every finish is chosen together, not on its own.

Stone against timber. Matte against gloss. Tiles against cabinetry. That's the part of a reno ro new build that never makes it onto a Pinterest board: the hundred small decisions that either work together or fight each other for the next twenty years.

This is what a designer is actually for. Not picking pretty things. Making sure they hold up next to each other, and next to your life.

We've got design spots open for projects starting end of October. Book a discovery call through our website to talk through your project goals and our design services.
