Third Québec book stop: Marché Jean-Talon, Montréal! 🍁

I’ll be at Librairie Gourmande on Saturday September 19 in the entry of Marché Jean-Talon from 11am to 1pm. I’ll be signing copies of Québec Kitchen Abroad and chatting about the cookbook, its recipes and photography, and my journey as a Québécoise expat making a cookbook in Australia from A to Z.

Montréal is where I lived for 15 years during my young adulthood, and many of the places, food and city life featured in the book are connected to those years.

Troisième arrêt dédicace : Marché Jean-Talon, Montréal! 🍁

A Québec trip isn’t complete without a soft serve, especially in summer, but you can enjoy them in some places in all seasons! My favourite is simply vanilla because the ice cream itself is just so good. But when there is a dash of maple syrup, even better!🍦🍁

From rural dairy regions to city streets, you’ll find them everywhere. And yes, they taste just as good as they look! 😋

This beautiful 🍦 was from CHAT-COLATE and shot by Annemarie Bolduc for Québec Kitchen Abroad.

It’s September, which means time for cottage pie! 🥩🌽🥔

In Québec, the mornings are getting crisp, the kids are back at school, and summer is slowly giving way to autumn. With the last sweet corn still filling the markets, our traditional “pâté chinois” feels like the perfect seasonal comfort food, even though it’s often made with canned corn and enjoyed year round in Québec kitchens.

For my Australian friends, spring may have officially arrived, but it’s still pretty chilly, especially in the High Country! This recipe, made with pantry staples, is perfect for those early spring days.

Every family has its own way of making it, but I can guarantee that my version with a little grated cheese on top will have you coming back for seconds! 😋

Find the recipe, along with the story behind its mysterious name, in my Québec Kitchen Abroad cookbook. It’s available in Australia via my website and in local shops, and in Québec by enquiry during my stay in September.

I had a great quality time at the chalet and now getting ready to head back to Montréal and Montérégie region. I’ll be crossing the fleuve Saint-Laurent (river) bridge a few times until late September.

Many friends to meet, more of my local favourite food checklist to enjoy, Québec Kitchen Abroad book tour continuing and seasonal activities planned! 🍁

À bientôt les amis!

Québec cheese boards, styled with my mum at the chalet and photographed for Québec Kitchen Abroad in 2023. 🧀🍁

If you’re a fan of all kinds of cheese, you have to plan a visit to the province, it really is a specialty here. 😋

What is your favorite Fromages d’ici ?

A very special image from my home region. 🍁

This is the old cabane à sucre (sugar shack) built by my great grandfather over 100 years ago, inherited by my great uncle and now abandoned, which I rediscovered and photographed during my 2023 visit. So many childhood memories of maple sugaring season came back.

This photograph is featured in the index pages of Québec Kitchen Abroad (hardcover). More images on page 42-43 of the ebook editions, available via my website.

A little taste of home 🎣

Lake fishing is a big part of life in Chaudière-Appalaches, and I grew up joining fishing outings at the chalet. I’m grateful to my uncle and aunt for bringing us many amazing catches over the years.

This is ouananiche (landlocked Atlantic salmon) a freshwater Atlantic salmon found in Québec lakes. I photographed and enjoyed this one cooked on the BBQ, by the lake, with my family during our 2023 visit.

Aren’t they beautiful! 😋
