The stunning Luxembourg Gardens were created to backdrop the Palais du Luxembourg, built in the early 1620’s for Marie de Medici who was pining for Florence.
The gardens are formally laid out with gravel paths, chestnut groves, flowers beds bursting with colour, ornamental ponds for small boats and the inaccessible lawns. There are hundreds of metal chairs, but today there were thousands of people enjoying the ambience of the sunny afternoon and not many spare seats!

Jardin des Plantes, or Botanic Gardens, in Montpellier, started way back in 1593, to study medicinal plants, is the oldest in France. Open to the public since then!

The greenhouse was built in late 1800’s, and houses a significant collection of cacti. An astronomical dome and stone landscaping add to the historic charm. There’s also an ancient olive tree, and an Osage orange tree with gnarly sticky fruits.
