𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗻𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀.
Most nocturnal animals do not see light the way we do. Snakes see only blue and green. Insects are drawn to blue-heavy light. Warm white light, closer to 2700k, stays far less visible to both.

This single detail shapes real design decisions. Landscape lighting near forests, parks, or wildlife corridors should lean warm, not cold…sometimes red, but beware of pythons, along with some other types of nocturnal snakes, they can detect infrared so can see you as a heat signature!

Automatic lighting controls are often blamed for being unreliable, but most issues come from poor sensor selection, wrong location or lack of coordination with the ceiling design.

There's a common belief that sustainable design starts with certifications and energy targets. We see it differently. Sustainability starts with simple questions. Why does this space need light? Who is it for? When should it turn on, and just as important, when should it turn off? How to light with respect to its place?

At its core, sustainable lighting design comes from a plain, honest understanding of the relationship between light, people, habitats, and the natural world.

Angela Suarez Lozano, our Design Director in Sydney, put it best:
"It's not about doing less bad. It's about designing light that still makes sense in ten or twenty years. It is our future after all."

Most of our industry answers this question with a certification program. We believe the question deserves a deeper answer - one that connects every lighting decision to the living world the project inhabits.

Green rating systems are a useful starting point. They set minimum standards and make sustainability measurable. But after more than 30 years in lighting design, we have come to believe that certification is a floor, not a ceiling.

𝗘𝗻𝗱𝗼 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 & PODIUM recently came together to create something worth visiting: "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴" - a space where furniture, lighting, materials, and spatial design work together to shape how a room truly feels. 𝗘𝗻𝗱𝗼 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 & 𝗣𝗢𝗗𝗜𝗨𝗠, in this collaboration, bring exactly that kind of thinking to the table: lighting that becomes one with the space, not just a fixture within it.

That kind of effort reflects something deeper. Since 1967, Endo has pursued a single idea rooted in the Japanese philosophy of Monozukuri: use less, create more, and build a new relationship between people and the light they live inside.

DJCoalition spent an afternoon here, walking the space, comparing notes on the spot, and following the conversation all the way to the control room, where the real mechanics of it all live.

Every site has a story before the first drawing is made. Bintan's story is one of the sea, centuries of trade winds and tidal rhythms, of a coastline that has always known how to receive people.

Hotel Indigo Bintan Lagoi Beach was designed to honour that. Architecture shaped to frame the water, interiors rooted in the maritime heritage of the Riau Archipelago, a landscape that brings the island's coastal character back to the ground beneath your feet.

Our role was to read that story and let light tell it, from the exterior that settles into blue hour rather than interrupts it, to the lobby that holds warmth while opening entirely to the sea, to the bar and dining spaces where amber on timber creates the kind of intimacy that makes people stay longer than they planned, to the guestrooms where layered light shifts with the person inside, not just the hour on the clock, like the way a well-designed space supports rest without announcing it.

The result is a building that belongs to its landscape after dark, grounded, present, and honest to where it stands.
