We’re stoked to share that Wallaby House took home two awards at the 2025 Building Design Awards for Rural Design and New House: $1M–$2M.

Set on a windswept coastal plain near Torbay, the home is shaped by salt-laden air, open paddocks, and long views to West Cape Howe. Two gabled pavilions are linked by a glazed gallery and anchored by a sheltered breezeway, a modern take on the classic dogtrot farmhouse.

Material restraint and spatial clarity guide the design: raked oak ceilings, a rammed earth fireplace, and a consistent 2700 mm datum. Externally, Wallaby , battened fibre cement and recycled Jarrah echo the tones of driftwood and grey skies, designed to soften and weather over time.

Workshop with one of our favourite collaborators, Leah from , shaping the palette for Corndarup House. Blackbutt floors, driftwood greys, powder blues, terrazzo and granite - coastal tones anchored by the garden and granite ridges beyond. These early sessions are where the design comes into focus: sketching, samples and models aligning to set the tone for life in the home.

Early studies testing light and mass before detail. A low, quiet house turned north to Wilson Inlet, reading wind and winter sun. The palette draws from the headland, stabilised limestone and charred timber - somewhere between cliff and cave. The terrace carries daily life to the horizon while the forms stay calm and recessive. Inside Rowe West, a calm, grounded palette sets the mood.

Custom blackbutt joinery forms a library wall with rolling ladder, book and record storage, framing the owners’ mid-century furniture and everyday rituals. Unpainted concrete blockwork, burnished concrete floors and warm timber surfaces carry light differently through the day, creating a subtle depth and tactility.

It’s a modest rural home made rich by detail and by the way it holds light and warmth.

Rowe West began with the compact Banksia floor plan from YourHome’s Design for Place series. Moving from inner-city Perth to a rural block, our clients were clear: design for passive solar performance, aim high on energy efficiency - and do so on a modest budget.

Sitting midway along a gently sloping site with views across farmland and native forest, the house takes its cues from place. Its shed-like gabled form is clad in dark custom orb and fibre cement, grounded by patterned concrete block blade walls that define arrival, frame key spaces, and extend visually from interior to exterior.

Inside, robust materials - raw blockwork, burnished concrete floors, and warm timber joinery (including a library wall with rolling ladder) - meet light-filled living. All main rooms are oriented north for winter sunshine; deep eaves and cross-ventilation help moderate summer heat. Performance glazing, insulation, and thermal mass combine to deliver a 9.2-star NatHERS rating.

As a fully electric home, sustainable features don’t stop at the shell: rooftop solar and battery storage, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, and climate-appropriate fixtures all shape a home built for the long haul.

Zincalume and timber - a simple pairing that works hard in this bush setting. The metal offers durability and resilience, while the timber softens the forms, settling into the surrounding landscape.

Ironstone Place is elevated through careful detailing and the luxurious use of modest natural materials. Designed for everyday living, it has a down-to-earth character that balances comfort and durability in its rural environment.

From Injidup Spring - a few quiet scenes where dark, tactile materials meet natural light. These spaces feel grounded and calm, with rough-hewn local stone adding texture and weight across both interior and exterior moments.

The solid masonry walls aren’t just expressive - they form part of a high-performance thermal envelope that helps moderate temperature year-round. Together with bulk insulation and thermally broken glazing, the home achieves an impressive 8.8-star NatHERS rating.

A clean, considered mix of styles.
 Brushed brass fittings by and seamless microcement surfaces bring a contemporary edge, while the Oxford bath by and Larsen vanity by add a quiet nod to mid‑century forms.

The result is a calm, tactile bathroom that feels both current and familiar - simple finishes layered with just enough character.

Throwback Thursday to the front courtyard of our Salt Addition in Yallingup.

Teak cladding brings texture and warmth to balance the coolness of concrete, steel and glass, while the striking cantilevered awning provides shelter without putting extra pressure on the existing septic system. What was once an unused space is now a well‑loved outdoor area, anchored between two yards.

The compact plan - a modern two-bedroom, two-bathroom home - works hard functionally. High windows frame views to the Yallingup Scarp beyond, neighbours drop by with produce, grandkids play finska on the lawn, and the outdoor shower gets daily use after a swim.

Years on, it still reflects how we approach residential work: thoughtful detailing, clever use of space, and a strong connection between home, occupants and place.
