The biggest mistake I see in interior design is people bypassing their own style for trends, and it’s literally draining their health and wellbeing. I’m building a tool to fix this. Who needs it?

This applies in residential and commercial projects.

What is your biggest struggle when trying to make design decisions for you renovation or new build project?

Capturing a moment. Sitting quietly, I watch the sunshine and breeze dance through the sheers. I appreciate all the textures and forms in the space. I am simply enjoying the moment that I have created.

If you want me to help you create a moment in your space, get in touch, and we can discuss the moments you dream of creating.

It was a stunning afternoon when I went for a walk. In summer in the Riverina, the light typically washes a golden glow over everything, and I never tire of it. It fills me with a great sense of connectivity to my surroundings and creative core. The colour palettes inspired by this time of year are a mix of warm tones cooled down by soft blue hues.

To show how the great outdoors can inspire a living space, I assembled a collection of beautiful pieces that bring the outside mood inside for you to enjoy.

I love collaborating with artisans to create a truly unique feature for my clients. Whether it is a commissioned artwork, walls covered in fabulous wallpaper, a customer piece of furniture, or simply reupholstering a piece of well-loved furniture, the outcome is always such a delight. I find that these pieces always bring so much joy to a client's project as it provides them with a story to tell as well.

The process is often a collaboration between the artisan, the client and me, so it is a great way to get really involved in your project too.

Working with artisans is also great from a sustainability perspective. Repurposing or upcycling a piece of furniture and working with local artisans rather than having a product shipped or trucked across the country or the globe helps reduce your project's sustainability impact.

Get in touch for a 15-minute discovery call if this resonates with you and your up-and-coming project.

Emily here! I want to share my journey into Interior Design and the launch of Emily Thompson Interior Design at the end of 2022.

Looking back, my first clue that I should be pursuing a career in Interior Design or Architecture was when I was 13 and designed an atrium house using my learnings on how people lived in ancient Italy and Greece. I loved contemplating how the people who lived in the space would interact with the indoor/outdoor space and which rooms should go where based on aspect and function. I got 100%.

Then, at 15, I designed a city for a geography assignment - developing complex plans for a city on the moon and again loved thinking about the needs of the people who lived there - food, water, air - and how they would interact with the space. I scored 21/20 (105%). I have often wondered if I should share those blueprints from the early 90s with Elon Musk!

Growing up in a small country town, I didn't even know that Architecture or Interior Design existed as career options, so I pursued a Bachelor of Science in Resource and Environmental Management.

My first glimpse into the world of Interior Design was when I was 21 and, on a whim, moved to the Netherlands to be an Au Pair. The Mother of the children I cared for was an artist who specialised in murals and painting techniques. She was so talented, creating marble look finials for staircases and desk inlays, restoring decorative finishes in beautiful old homes and the fresco ceiling in Amsterdam Station.

The couple were also renovating an Old Water Mill they owned in the South of France. I spent many hours wandering the Broquant markets and learning painting techniques. I was hooked and decided that Interior Design was where I belong.

Roads are rarely straight, so in the 25 years since I've had a ten-year career in Corporate Banking and then nine years in marketing and events. With my marketing hat on, I have delivered a shop rebrand and fit-out, a cafe fit-out, a whole building fit-out for a corporate, and provided colour consultations and inspiration sessions. I have also delivered a variety of home renovations and updates.

So, I guess you could say that Interior Design chased me down!

VALUES - Part 2: I hope you enjoyed learning more about what makes me tick in my Values - Part 1 post yesterday. If you missed it, check it out. Today, I will share Values 3 and 4 (I have so many more), but these are the top four that shape my approach to your Interior Design project -My Core Values.

Value three I like to call "respect and love the past; embrace the future." I love old things, old homes, old buildings, old furniture, old homewares. I love the stories they have to tell. I love to imagine the people who used them when they were new, and I love to give them a new lease on life! I also love new design that shares the qualities that provide the things we love from yesteryear their longevity. I strive to achieve longevity in my designs. Trends come and go, but good design is timeless. I love bringing the old and the new together when the opportunity arises and helping them find common ground and a resonance that brings deep satisfaction and joy to those who love them.

My fourth and final value is "to be curious and strive for excellence in all areas, creating a truly unique experience." There is no one way to do anything, and I love finding a new solution to any problem. I love to learn and find out why something is the way it is, to question if I believe that is the only way it can be and to try and look at it in a new light and see if there is an alternative solution. Maybe something better. Ultimately, there aren't many things that are just black and white. There are usually myriad shades of grey in between, and I will strive to find the one that is the right fit to create something truly unique.

VALUES - PART 1: I think it is essential that I share with you the values behind Emily Thompson Interior Design. My values are a reflection of me and how I like to approach your Interior Design needs. They also offer a great filter when deciding if I fit your needs - like attracts like. So, my next two posts are dedicated to sharing my four core values with you.

The first I eluded to in my journey to launching Emily Thompson Interior Design - "To understand the relationship between people and the space they inhabit and, where possible, enhance their experience and human connection." Spaces are created for specific purposes that centre around human action and interaction. Whether the space is a home or an office, people use them as they go about their day and interact with one another. Interior Design is about making the everyday extraordinary, whether creating a better customer experience for a business or creating spaces where families can develop a deep sense of belonging or enjoy social connections with those they hold dear beyond their central family unit. This relationship extends to the intersection between the built environment and nature and how people transition from one to the other seamlessly.

For me, the transitioning between the built environment and nature is an integral part of the Australian Lifestyle. It brings me to my second value, "to be inspired by nature and the creative process." Nature is the ultimate creator and an excellent source of inspiration. I love the look and feel of natural materials, and I am drawn to them in my design process. Cotton, Leather, Timber, Stone, Ceramics, Glass, Linen, and the list of beautiful natural materials continues. The beautiful pieces artisan makers and creators craft from these materials are also a great source of inspiration for me.

I would love to know if these two values resonate with you. If so, let me know which ones do in the comments or via a DM. I look forward to sharing the rest of my core values with you in my next post.

I feel so grateful for the opportunity to work with Louise when she was finalising the beautiful Kestrel Nest EcoHut Highfield Farm and Woodland before it opened its doors to the public in 2020.

Louise and David had already done the majority of the work for the space, but she wanted some input from me on colours to bring into the space to enhance the connection between the interior and exterior environments the hut offers. A colour consultation created the clarity she was looking for and the space has been adored by visitors ever since!

I am taking bookings for October and November at the moment. You can use the link in bio to book your 90 minute initial consultation now.
