It was a perfect day for our monthly members Print Club yesterday.

We had a collection of processes set up:

- rosin and acid to etch tonal aquatints on copper plates.
- paint for colourful bird paintings.
- charcoal pencils for portraiture.
- lino tools to carve delicate scales onto fish.

Thanks to everyone who came along, see you next month!

COMMUNITY - Refugee Women's Wellbeing Group

Our wonderful group of women created patterned paper using mark-making techniques last week, and then cut, tore and drew back into these to create colourful abstract landscapes today.

These workshops are an initiative of the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga. We meet for weekly art therapy sessions at Unique State, exploring lived experiences and creative self-expression for mental health and wellbeing.

The Refugee Womens Wellbeing Group is supported by firsthealth Limited and Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network Community Grants through the Australian Government’s PHN program.

The Hearing Voices Group (HVG) is a peer-led self-help group that offers a safe and supportive space for people with lived experience of hearing voices, visions and other unusual sensory perceptions.

Since May 2025, the fortnightly group has been meeting at Unique State, where participants have been creating artwork that explores and reflects their individual experiences. The artworks and conversations that have emerged will also form a booklet of words and images, with plans to build greater understanding, awareness and support around mental health.

The group is facilitated by Murrumbidgee Local Health District’s Mental Health Drug and Alcohol service, with support from Wellways Australia and the Melissa Roberts Foundation.

DRAWING LAB - Term 2 ✏️

Our Drawing Lab crew explored a shiny still life with metallic media!

From copper, brass, pewter, silver, steel, and gold precious objects and everyday essentials everyone found something to respond to.

Using paint pens, pencils, soft pastels, oil pastels, watercolours and graphite on white and black paper it was a session with lots of experimentation, play and observation!

COMMUNITY | Installation of 'In Our Backyard'

It has been a busy week, starting with the installation of works from the Hearing Voices Group.

We can't wait to share the works with the community at the launch next week:

Thanks to everyone who joined U/S as we celebrated Print Day in May with a studio open day!

It was great to hear Sue Wood speak with enthusiasm the possibilities of artist books and creating narratives without words.

We all enjoyed the collagraph print demonstration with Cathy Blake, who shared samples, plates and inked up while a captive audience looked on, and asked questions.

We also had a number of visitors print their own tote bag and apron, draw from our printmakers still life and view newly arrived works on paper by Unique State artists.

Thanks to Daniel for catering, and mum and dad (who despite unable to attend, dropped in yesterday to sweep leaves and w**d the front garden).

Thanks to visitors new and familiar for making today a great event!

See you again soon!
