Hello and welcome to Granny’s Kitchen. Baking and cooking has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Some of my fondest memories are with Grandma in her kitchen on the farm, mixing up a cake and learning how to knead dough. This was a life skill I have passed to all my kids and now I have grandchildren in my kitchen cooking. In just four generations, we have seen so many changes, not
just in the kitchen but in our communities and how we live. No longer are girls, just the cook and home maker. You can be a doctor, lawyer, CEO or even a mechanic or a dump truck driver and be a wife, mother and cook. My father encouraged me to follow my dreams and not to let being a girl dictate what I wanted out of life, so I made a list, a big list, now there is nothing wrong with big dreams. So here I am fifty years later. I have ticked of a lot off that list and today I find myself living a busy life being a portrait photographer and in my kitchen cooking… and a few things have changed in the kitchen. The wood stove has been replaced with electric, you no longer mix a cake with a wooden spoon or whisk eggs by hand or even knead the bread dough by hand. Technology has improved things for us. I can still remember my excitement when I received my black and white Sunbeam Mixmaster as a wedding gift. It was a mighty machine. Goodbye wooden spoon. Now I have replaced my Mixmaster with another mighty machine, my Thermomix. I will admit the price tag of $2089 scared me for a while. What kitchen appliance is worth that much? Well my Thermomix is worth every cent! Grandma must have felt the same way when she got an electric stove. No more stoking the fire with wood and keeping it burning all day and knowing that if the fire is not just right you might just have a burnt cake. So, for me, owning a Thermomix is just the next step in our ever-evolving technology in the kitchen. I can still use the recipes given to me by Grandma and the smell of fresh bread is the same…. the love and laughter of kids cooking with Granny is the same. I believe we are being smarter with our time and cutting down on how many appliances we have. We are leading very busy lifestyles and it is important we eat healthy well balance meals and there is nothing like a compliment on a meal served to family and friends. I think what I like most about my Thermomix is that I can cook anything my heart desires. I can try new flavours from around the world using tried and tested recipes or one of our family favourites. I keep most staples in my pantry and the biggest decision is what will I make today.
