A 60 second synthesis of a 20 minute session - drawing a snippet of the "collection" of rocks, twigs, etc. that my little girl found in the Canadian forest.

First time drawing a pine cone - not so easy! And after a long break from sketching, I'm glad to say that it didn't take too long to warm up.

Now that our little bubba is 3 months old I plan to get back into sketching more regularly 🤞

Laying is everything, and even in a home wanting to be serene, variation in texture and tone is so important to creating warmth and atmosphere.

In the entry at North Avoca house, the palette is natural and textural; Venetian plaster walls in the wonderful colour Resene Half Thorndon Cream with deeper toned classic skirting (in full strenth Thorndon Cream), flagstone pavers, oak joinery, and a little bench seat for putting on / taking off shoes covered in a classic William Morris print.

Within the largely monochromatic palette of warm white + natural materials and textures, the willow leaves of the print connect the space with the garden out the front and bring movement and life - as well as a little bit of whimsy.

A little throwback to Paris Design Week in January this year - when it was cold enough to wear big coats and promenade in the streets without melting 😅🧥

The next edition is this September and I’m really looking forward to it - it’s a great boost to the creative vibes and always a pleasure to be surrounded by so much beauty. Paris is of course a most excellent and natural host in this sense.

I’m thinking about this now because in France, August is the summer break and almost everyone goes on holidays or at least heads home to visit family for the month. That means July is the end of the “year”, and September the start of the new year.

So, that means it’s already that time of the year when we start thinking about planning for the year ahead - it’s almost the moment for making New Year’s resolutions (for me at least - including learning Egyptian properly so that I can talk with my parents in law and understand what my little ones and their dad are talking about when they switch from French 😋).

Alors, one month of summer break coming up and then into the year ahead!
