A highlight from my design career was attending a master class in 2008 in Pitwater, New South Wales at which I was starstruck by the architectural greats, Glenn Murcutt AO, Richard Laplastrier AO and Peter Stutchbury. The second photo shows me presenting a site specific work with my group for which I received a compliment on my drawings from Murcutt (a moment I'll never forget as an impressionable uni student!). We also visited the modest yet elegantly elemental treehouse home of Laplastrier. Whilst making tea for us in a giant billy he described how goannas would waltz through their home and kookaburras would dive into the cooking as their house was completely open to the wild valley - without any glass at all. We also visited some of the most beautifully crafted homes along Sydney Harbour and visited Stutchbury's Sydney office. I was a landscape architecture student at the time and lessons from this trip will always stay with me, along with an important moment where we all sat around a radio in the muddy forest listening live to 'the apology' to Stolen Generations in Parliament. It really crystallised my concern for Australia's environment and how important it is to 'touch the earth lightly' as Glen Murcutt espoused.

From a sad patch of concrete and barkchip to a habitat garden teeming with frogs and butterflies... flashback to my first garden in Canberra over 10 years ago! Yes, there were frogs that actually climbed up through the tangled 'happy wanderer' climbers - I loved listening to them at night as I watered the garden 🐸🐸🐸. Swipe through to see an initial design sketch followed by some concrete removal & digging action shots. Although the space was small, I was determined to make it abundant with native plants and edibles. One of my favourite aspects was the timbercrete pavers interspersed with groundcovers allowing for a more thermally stable microclimate. There was also a cute little vertical garden with chillis and native flowers. We made a small mound covered in endemic grasses with a banksia tree as a focal point and a raised pave area for the outdoor table above. I just loved tending to and being in this tiny garden!

Flashback to my first apartment, bought off the plan in Canberra in 2012! Marius was based in Sydney but would renovate with me on the weekends. We expanded the tiny little kitchen by adding extra floor tiles and an island along with funky pendants and a hazelnut hued pressed tin splashback (which required some aerobics to press on to the wall tiles underneath!).
I had some fun with a stencil and lichen hued paint to create the decorative living room wall (the aim was to create extra depth to the narrow room). I had a lot of fun collecting vintage/retro pieces such as the massive coffee table, which I picked up from the tip shop for $10 and then painted emerald and had a glass top made for.
I remember what a joy it was to experiment with design details in this tiny little space to turn it into a colourful cosy home. Garden post on the way!
