Vale Mr. Mitchell.

Yesterday I said a final farewell to my wonderful Dad, Roger Mitchell.

After passing peacefully last week, the immediate family gathered for an intimate service and then toasted to his life at a beautiful lunch at Osteria Renata.

I chose to call my business MR. MITCHELL to honour my father. As a general surgeon in Ballarat, he was revered and respected by the community. His care and attention to his patients was unrivalled, and his dedication to his work was inspirational. I like to think that I’ve adopted much of the caring approach that made him so special.

He was a man of impeccable style, always caring about his appearance, right to the very end. His professionalism was softened by a beautiful, dry sense of humour.

As a father, he was firm but fair, working hard to provide a life of opportunity and adventure for his whole family.

One of my proudest professional moments was inviting Mum and Dad to the 14-year anniversary of my business. They got to meet many of my wonderful clients (most of whom I’m friends with today), tradespeople I’d worked with (and continue to work with) and favourite suppliers (who are still my favourite suppliers). It was a chance for my parents to see the community that I was proud to be a part of.

Although Dad is no longer with us, his spirit will always live on for me through the values he passed onto me that shape who I am as a person and as a business operator.

Love you Dad. Miss you already.

❤️❤️❤️

PORTSEA BEACH HOUSE

Taking inspiration from the modernist lines of mid-century architecture, our Portsea Beach House project combines a contemporary design aesthetic with the softness of an unstructured organic approach to decoration.

We were engaged by the clients for a full redesign of the interior (including all furniture and accessories) and exterior, including extensive remodelling of the kitchen and bathrooms, redesign of the pool and rear deck, and even consultation on the landscape design and plant selections.

A striking 9 metre long Spotted Gum kitchen island bench spread over split levels is the central focal point for the entire home, and serves as a food preparation area, a casual meals table and an elegant bar seating area for evening cocktails.

Colourful patterned tiles on the kitchen splashback are a nod to the client’s Portuguese heritage, and bring in a casual playfulness that is continued throughout the home.

Modern technology is integrated within the rustic overlay of materials and decorative elements, making the home livable, relaxed and approachable. Exactly what’s demanded of a beach house on the peninsula.

Lighting is a mix of contemporary architectural pieces from Flos and Mondo Luce. The pendants in the dining room were custom-made from old lobster pots, and the feature pendant over the kitchen island is handwoven by First Nations women from the Northern Territory, purchased through Koskela.

Furniture pieces were custom designed or sourced through local Melbourne suppliers.

THE MITTAGONG HOUSE

Inspired by the notion of simultaneously celebrating and creating legacy, The Mittagong House was designed to pay respect to passed family members and create a new family home that would honour their memory in perpetuity.

A palette of coal, clay and eucalypt green was chosen, inspired by the regeneration of the surrounding forest after the devastating bushfires. The concrete slab is burnished to a deep coal colour, exterior timbers are to be charred and interior timbers stained black. Delicate Japanese mosaics glazed in shades of green and black are representational of singed leaves, and green quartzite stone slabs and mosaics celebrate the emergence of new life after the blazes.

True luxury speaks softly.

At MR MITCHELL Interiors we believe the most memorable spaces aren’t defined by what’s added, but by what’s left out.

Our Toorak project, a 1930s Tudor-Revival home by architect Robert Hamilton, became a study in balance: preserving its historic soul while introducing modern ease. With generous ceilings, a central staircase, and warm materials like Taj Mahal quartzite, brass and aged bronze, we layered subtle luxury into an authentic, restrained home.

Whether it’s this heritage residence or a contemporary apartment, our work draws on proportion, light and material honesty to create interiors that feel easy to live in, and quietly confident.

THE BUTTER FACTORY

Swipe to see our creative development from concept to completion.

We were engaged by the clients to design every element of this restaurant and bar, from the logo and signage through to the full interior fitout, and all the furniture and lighting specifications.

The name is a play on the building’s original use as a dairy and butter factory, giving some great angles for developing the concept.

A significant feature for the venue is the custom light feature over the bar, featuring over 300 recycled milk bottles, designed by MM Director Andrew Mitchell, in collaboration with Artefact Industries

Stunning Italian terrazzo tiles from Urban Edge were used for the floor in front of the bar, and also informed the geometric pattern of the shelving units behind the bar and throughout the restaurant.
