The Melbourne workshop where Macedon Ranges Timber Windows & Doors builds its custom frames by hand, this shot shows why the frame specification matters before the glazing conversation starts.

Timber frames built to accept double glazing aren't the same as standard single-glazed frames. The profile needs to be deeper and structurally engineered to carry the additional weight and thickness of a double-glazed unit. It's built into the design from the beginning, not retrofitted.

Cardrona Farm: a Jackson Dwellings build set across open farmland in the Macedon Ranges.

The gable end of the main living pavilion is floor-to-ceiling aluminium and glass, Monument powder-coated frames following the full pitch of the roofline. The same specification runs consistently across every elevation. Fixed panels, sliding doors, highlights. When a build is designed at this level, the glazing has to match it.

Standard aluminium conducts heat readily, useful as a structural material, problematic in a window frame. Without intervention, heat moves freely through the metal from one side of the glass to the other, working against whatever insulation the rest of the building provides.

A thermally broken frame addresses this with a polyamide barrier bonded inside the aluminium profile. Polyamide has very low thermal conductivity, which interrupts the heat transfer path through the frame. The aluminium either side retains its structural integrity — the break is thermal, not structural.

For builds in the Macedon Ranges where winter heating loads are significant, the frame specification matters as much as the glazing unit. Thermally broken aluminium systems are available through Evolve Windows in Woodend, and are regularly used in projects targeting 7-Star NatHERS compliance across central Victoria.

Proud to supply the window package for another Jackson Dwellings project in the Macedon Ranges.

The pairing here is deliberate, a wider fixed panel alongside a tall narrow vertical window. Together they bring natural light into the dining space from two angles without compromising the wall plane. The black powder-coated aluminium frames define the opening without competing with the interior.

Double glazing is the standard specification for energy-efficient builds across the Macedon Ranges. Triple glazing is the next step, and Evolve Windows now installs it.

Triple-glazed units consist of three panes of glass separated by two argon-filled cavities, with Low-E soft-coat glass included as standard. The performance difference over double glazing is measurable. Using Viridian VistaTech triple-glazed units, U-values reach as low as 0.70 in the XP range, compared to 1.0 for a high-performing double-glazed uPVC unit. For reference, a lower U-value means less heat escaping through the glass in winter and less heat entering in summer.

Evolve installs triple glazing into two frame systems: uPVC profiles, and custom hardwood timber frames. Both are suited to projects where passive house principles or 7-Star NatHERS compliance are driving the specification, and both are available to discuss at the Woodend showroom.

For the Macedon Ranges climate, where winter heating loads are significant, triple glazing represents the strongest available response through the glazing specification alone. It also aligns with tightening energy standards for new residential construction in Victoria.

The range of what's possible from a timber joinery workshop is broader than most people assume. Standard rectangular sashes, arched heads, Federation fanlights, casements, awnings, double-hung configurations; each one fabricated to suit the opening and the character of the building it's going into.

There's a common misconception that uPVC windows are simply an imported product. The range Evolve Windows supplies is manufactured in Victoria, using uPVC profiles precision-extruded in Europe, where the technology and material standards for this system originated.

The construction starts with multi-chambered uPVC profiles reinforced with steel inserts for structural rigidity. Glazing is argon-filled double or triple glazed, with Low-E coatings available across the range. The result is a window system that reaches U-values as low as 1.0, the strongest thermal performance available in a residential window frame.

Acoustic performance reaches up to 45dB reduction, which is relevant for properties near roads or in exposed rural settings across the Macedon Ranges. BAL 40 rated systems are available for bushfire-prone sites.

Multipoint locking and European-style Tilt and Turn functionality are standard on the uPVC range. The profiles are fully recyclable at end of life.

Houdini's Cucina in Diggers Rest has completed the rebuild of its function space. and it's a sharp result. Modern, functional, and a great venue for locals and visitors to experience what the Diggers Rest cucina does well.

Evolve Windows was proud to supply and install the window and door package throughout the new building. The glazed internal partitions give the space flexibility for different event formats, while the full-length glazing along the verandah keeps the building open and connected to the street.

A new build in the Macedon Ranges — and the glazing brief was straightforward: maximise the connection to the landscape without compromising thermal performance in a climate that demands it.

The aluminium sliding door and window package supplied and installed by Evolve Windows uses double glazed units throughout. The custom triangular fixed panels follow the pitch of the gable roofline, a configuration that required precise frame fabrication to suit the geometry of the build. Large format sliding doors open the living and dining areas directly to the surrounding farmland, and based on the evidence in these shots, the Highland cattle are equally invested in the outlook.
