The September Issue of Architectural Digest spotlights the Atlanta home of Usher where a pair of Roman and Williams Original Design Porto Sconces adorn his hallway. The Porto’s vase-like glass shade, hand-blown in Brooklyn, gracefully rests atop a sturdy, handcrafted metal arm. Intricate knurled detailing, an expansive backplate that tapers elegantly toward the base, and a custom-cast lip highlight its minimalist design and unique materiality.

When you take your seat at Marcel, you can literally feel the solidity and grandeur of the space—a Roman and Williams–designed dining room within the iconic Breuer building on Madison Avenue. The Stockholm Chair, with its classic, elegant, and archetypal shape engages the body and eye. A solid wood frame gives sculpted strength; legs are poised and the two front legs are carved at the top to join the apron, tenoned for strength. Delicate in appearance, yet strong with integrity, built to last.

The Lentium Table Lamp, featured prominently at Marcel 945 Madison, marks Robin and Stephen Alesch’s first exploration of the deep traditions of cast glass and metal in lighting. The Lentium is cast entirely by hand to feature rich texture, forging, machining, and tooling. The semi-cylindrical shades are entrusted to master artisans who employ fire and breath to capture the thick, bubbled glass and ideal illumination. The lamp is named for and inspired by lens-like objects used across artistic and industrial mediums to focus and defocus light beams.

This piece is handblown by glass artisan Hyunsung Cho who creates delicately shaped glassware in his studio in Seoul, South Korea. Recalling the wonder of nature, the cups and stems of his graceful glasses evoke spring flowers that sprout from seeds after winter. Cho uses crushed colored glass and very thin gold leaf to decorate the unique and beautifully shaped stems of his glassware. For each glass, Cho hand blows the cup, the stem, and the foot, and then puts the three parts together to create glassware that is a lasting treasure.

The Footed Vase was designed, prototyped and refined by Stephen and Robin Alesch over the span of months. Each vase is individually free-blown, an exacting art requiring careful attention to detail, a deft hand, and years of training. In its final stages, it undergoes a rigorous, multiphase cold work process, during which a single master glassblower cuts, grinds, and polishes the piece entirely by hand.

When Stephen and Robin Alesch designed the OVO Chair, they didn’t have to look far for inspiration. It takes its silhouette from the curving, organic shapes found in the ovate-shape leaves that have a narrow top and wider base, and grow on the trees on their Montauk property. The Ovo Chair has a gently sloping rounded back and a slender void along its spine, evoking the midrib of the ovate leaf. Each solid wood, made-to-order piece is offered in a range of hardwoods and finishes, and handcrafted using time-honored techniques.
