The story behind our newest ‘The 1894 Residence’ by 🛌

On 1 March 2024, we opened our newest residence and welcomed already many guests over the past few weeks, but the road to opening was not so quick and smooth....

In the spring of 2022, at the time we started our search for a suitable first property for ‘Domani Hotels’, we visited a flat right opposite the property that eventually became our newest residence. From here, we saw that the property, with a shop below, was completely empty on the upper floors and we saw huge potential here. For weeks we tried to make contact with the then owner (which was difficult). Initially, the owner was not interested but we eventually convinced him with a good proposal.

The property is a retail property and was known for the ‘Filou & Friends’ shop for many years. In terms of location, with the Groenplaats in its backyard, it is centrally located in a beautiful shopping street and in the heart of the city.

We finally signed in September 2022 but then it had yet to begin... a difficult process with getting permits, delays with the city, problems with everything you can’t imagine. Finally in September 2023, works could start .

And as with any renovation, the budget was smaller than the final invoices and costs which caused huge discussions and stress. In the end, we decided to paint ourselves, sanding floors and everything we could with our normal 2 left hands (😂). For weeks, we worked late to meet our deadline of 1 March (no I’m lying, we pushed back our deadline twice haha).

We opened on 1 March and already welcomed more guests than we could have imagined.

And over the past few weeks, we found again pottential properties for new hotels but for now we are going to focus on what we have now and try to give ourselves a break (in between cleaning).

Oh yes, the facade will be completely renovated to its original 1894 state this autumn😍

Joachim Van Doninck: “Met de tape werken voelt voor mij als schilderen. Ik heb een moeilijke relatie met kleur. Kleuren selecteren met de tape lukt me wel. De kleuren selectie gebeurd dan door het commerciële aanbod dat toegankelijk is voor mij. De limieten die de tape mij opleggen tijdens het maakproces zijn voor mij heel belangrijk en interessant om mee te werken.”
