When we moved from Brussels to Prague, our furniture arrived by truck within a week. Coming back from Singapore was a different story: it took months, with customs and permits to clear along the way.

I always start to feel at home the day my own things arrive. That wait is the best time to plan, so everything fits the moment it's unpacked.

Three walnut sideboards I chose for clients in Singapore, reimagined here in Brussels 🤍 New walls, new light, new floors - the pieces themselves stayed exactly as they were. I chose this sofa for a house on the water in Singapore, together with the leather armchairs and the blue lattice lamps behind it 🤍

Years later I wanted to see how the same pieces would live in Brussels, so I reimagined them in a maison de maître salon, with high ceilings and soft grey northern light.

The pieces stay exactly as they were. Around them: walnut, wool, linen and a quieter palette.

The clocks go back in four weeks, and after that it's dark before six.

If you add one thing this autumn, make it a floor lamp in the darkest corner of the room. Then a lamp beside where you actually sit, something at the front door so you're not walking into a dark hall, and finally the far wall, so the room doesn't stop at the sofa.

Four lamps, in the order that makes the biggest difference. Warm bulbs, in all of them — and there's no rule that says the fittings have to be quiet. A little colour in the lamp itself does no harm.

Tonight the autumn equinox tips the year over. From this week on, the evenings come in a little earlier each day 🍂

This is a corner of a client's home from my archive, reimagined for this time of year: a stone lamp lit early, a candle beside the striped jug, branches just on the turn.

This is the week to bring the light down to table height, close to where you sit, and switch it on before you need it.

There's a stretch of weeks every autumn before the heating really goes on. This is what I'd start with.

A wool rug where the floor is coldest. Cushions and throws in different weights. Curtains hung properly and closed at dusk. The lamps on by four. One candle in the evening.

Some of it holds the heat in. Some of it just makes a room feel softer, quieter and more like somewhere you want to sit. Both matter once the weather turns.

The cotton stems were the last thing in. They're what tipped the whole room into autumn 🍂

Everything else here is about texture — velvet, wool, wood, and a lamp the colour of a conker.

I like to collect old plates and silverware from the flea markets in Brussels.

There was once a tea set in Jeu de B***e that I liked and didn't act on — I went back the next week and of course it was gone. That's the lesson with flea markets: don't overthink it. If you like it and there's room in the car, it comes home with you 🤍
