Did you know that when we throw something “away”… it doesn’t really go away? ♻️

We often imagine the story ends the moment plastic goes into the recycling bin.

But reality is more complex.

Recent reporting from The Guardian, supported by data from the Basel Action Network, shows that every year a significant share of plastic waste is transported across borders, with part of it leaving Europe entirely.

Because plastic doesn’t disappear.

It moves.

📦 Plastic waste exports (2021–2024):
🇩🇪 Germany: ~1.02 billion kg
🇳🇱 Netherlands: ~910 million kg
🇧🇪 Belgium: ~485 million kg
🇫🇷 France: ~185 million kg

This isn’t about blaming individuals.

The current recycling system faces real structural challenges: many plastics are difficult, expensive, or nearly impossible to recycle efficiently at scale.

So even with good intentions, waste doesn’t always get processed the way people expect.

And sometimes, it ends up thousands of kilometers away from where it was first used.

The uncomfortable truth?

“Recyclable” doesn’t always mean “actually recycled.”
