RARE German M18 “Ear Cut-Out” Helmet Issued to the Royal Afghan Army

One of the rarest variants of the German Stahlhelm family has just been added to our website.

Originally produced in very limited numbers by Eisenhüttenwerk Thale (ET) during the final stages of the First World War, the legendary M18 “Ear Cut-Out” (Ohrenausschnitt) helmet was designed to improve hearing and comfort for specialist troops. Surviving examples are exceptionally scarce, making them highly desirable among advanced German helmet collectors.

What makes this particular helmet even more special is its fascinating second life. Following German military service, it was officially reissued to the Royal Afghan Army, where it remained in use for many years. Even better, it still retains its original Afghan national badge, a feature that is almost never encountered and greatly enhances both its historical significance and collector value.

An untouched, honest example with outstanding character, combining one of the rarest German First World War helmet models with a unique and well-documented post-war military history. A true museum-worthy piece that would be the highlight of any serious helmet collection.

German Medic (Sanitäter) Camo Helmet... fresh from the barn.

Just listed: an absolutely untouched M42 Heer helmet that started its life as a German combat medic (Sanitäter) helmet. Beneath the stunning period-applied green camouflage, the original white paint and large red cross are still clearly visible, while the Heer decal was deliberately left exposed.
