This was a little tricky. Plain, white enamel paint on this little hard wood vanity bench. She wanted a cushion. I could have made the cushion and stapled it underneath, then covered it with a black dust cover. But, seats get dirty, so I wanted to make it a removable cushion for her so it could easily be cleaned.
1. Started with a 2 inch piece of high density foam the size of the bench seat.
2. Wrapped that foam in 1/2 inch batting, then covered it with a piece of white cotton, securing the batting and slip stitching it closed.
3. cut the 2 1/2 inch piece that would wrap around the lower part below the seat, placing a strap in the center of each piece. These 4 straps would go underneath the seat and secure to a snap, holding the completed cushion in place.
4. Add welting around this "girdle".
5. Make the top to go over the cushion, just a little bigger than the seat bottom. With the batting, etc., the seat cushion was just a tiny bit larger and softer than the original piece of cut foam.
6. Sew the top piece to the girdle.
7. Cut two pieces slightly larger than the size of the seat and divide into two pieces, add zipper.
8. Sew the bottom piece with the zipper into the already assembled top & girdle.
9. Add the cushion inside the zippered pocket.
10. Place over bench seat and snap into place.
(you can't see it, but the button in the center says "Handmade with Love"
Presto, vanity seat completed.
