🦌 The last Woodland caribou disappeared from mainland Nova Scotia around 1905. These animals once roamed the province in large herds: many places in Nova Scotia are still named for them.

Unfortunately, caribou suffered from the influx of white-tailed deer, and from over-hunting and habitat loss at the hands of settlers. Woodland caribou still live in other parts of Canada, though these other populations are also in decline.

In the 1960s, there was an attempt to re-introduce caribou to Cape Breton Highlands National Park, but the new population quickly vanished. It is presumed to have been wiped out by a parasitic worm carried by whitetail deer. Once a species has become extirpated (locally extinct), it is very difficult to re-introduce it.

The low barrens of and the woods of Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site provided ideal habitat for Woodland caribou and moose. Take a petroglyph tour at Kejimkujik and see an engraving of the Woodland caribou. https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ns/kejimkujik/culture/autochtone-indigenous/petroglyphes-petroglyphs
