I was loading up my wood storage shed the other day with fresh cut blocks and came across this large piece of red oak I've had drying for over a year. Figured it was ready so I got it trimmed up and mounted to make a large bowl from it. There were a couple cracks I had to fill with sanding dust and CA glue but it came out really nice. It's 12 1/2 inches across and 5 inches deep, a nice large salad bowl or a centerpiece fruit bowl.

Straightened up my wood pile in the shop today and came across this twisted piece of old cherry wood Looked interesting so I turned this nice little ring box out of it this afternoon. It had quite a few cracks and voids that needed filling but it came together nicely after some TLC with CA glue, coffee grounds & cherry wood sanding dust.

In collaboration with Bushel & Barrow Natural Food Store a small selection of my wood turned pieces are now available at their store. Still a bit bird brained this afternoon so I turned out one of these, a bird on a live edge nest. The bird is turned from some alder I cut back in early January for doing these small things and the nest is from a piece of dry cherry. The bird's head pivots on a small dowel that's glued into the body so you can point it where you want.

With the Easter gifts now presented I can post these. Ultra light Easter egg birdhouses turned from dry pine, spray painted and finished with brightly coloured turned birds. They're actually lighter than a real egg.

This week's work has been a run of birdhouses to build up my inventory, and I raised the bar on these ones by also turning the tiny birds for each one. You can buy some at Michael's but they're cheap looking and are not what I want for these. Also, I can tailor the bird to fit any birdhouse I make.

A few I used dye for colouring but the finish was satin and I wanted them to stand out so for the rest I used fingernail polish to make them really pop. That did the trick. Most are on their perch but a few I tucked into the birdhouse hole itself. You'll even find a cardinal that I conjured up with some wood turning magic :)

I used birch with the bark on for a bunch and had a piece of older spalted birch in my shed for the roofs on those. For the maple ones I used an old maple fence post that I replaced last weekend which I noticed was solid above ground and was dry & spalted. It's amazing what you can use for these little things. Here are all the pics...

One of the pieces I saved from the woodpile the other day was a crotch section of maple that was aged and spalted. Today I trimmed it up and turned this gorgeous bowl from it. I went with a globular design to maximize as much of the wood as I could and left the natural edge on as well to show off more of Mother Nature's artwork.

It's about 7 inches across by nearly 6 inches deep and has that beautiful grain the spalting process does to wood. Sorry folks, this one is not for sale, it's been claimed by Gwen. Even though we have lots of bowls around here some pieces are just too special to let go :)

After finishing up another project this morning, this afternoon was a good chance to mill up the wood I saved from the woodpile yesterday. Fourteen more ring box blanks are ready for turning and itemized by wood species. Should be some pretty pieces coming up...

I don't have a lot of burls left so things made from these are pretty special. This piece I split in half for a couple ring boxes to get more milage from it.

This particular one took A LOT of creative crack filling since it had a split right down to the middle. I packed the crack with several layers of coffee grounds and CA glue (super glue) and actually had to build the section in on the cover as it was completely open. I do like a challenge though and this was certainly one. Here's the finished product for the win :)

Putting some extra wood in the basement today that I had tarped over under the deck. Scored a bunch of aged, spalted, and rippled pieces for boxes and a couple bowls. This stuff is about 3 years old so is ready to turn. More rescued firewood :)

Turned out this little beauty a few minutes ago. Another piece of apple wood which always turns and finishes really nice. I chose a design I did a couple days ago since I quite liked it, and made the top concave in keeping with the shape of the sides. This piece is all about the flow from curve to curve with simple details so as not to take away from the the feature itself, which is the beauty of the wood. The inside of the cover is detailed as well for extra accent.

Further developments on the whiskey glass project. Since the wood I had was red oak it didn't hold water (or good whiskey). Not wanting to just have it stuck on a shelf I turned a top for it today and turned it into a small ring box. Since the inside was charred I dyed the top black for accent, leaving the k**b au natural.
