Friday Fabric Fix - Wildflower Meadow

This week’s Friday Fabric Fix is bringing a little bit of sunshine to the shop!

Wildflower Meadow by Gabrielle Neil for Camelot Fabrics is a fresh, cheerful collection filled with pretty florals, playful dots and coordinating stripes. The mix of soft blues, pinks, yellows and greens gives it that bright, happy feeling without being too sweet.

We love a collection that gives you lots of options, and this one definitely does. Mix the florals and coordinates together for a quilt, use a favourite print for a bag or table runner, or tuck a few into your stash for those projects that just need a pop of colour.

And we’ve made it easy to get started! We have Wildflower Meadow in fat quarter bundles and 10” squares and a few of our favourites available by the metre, The pre-cuts are a great way to get a little bit of everything in the collection - and the 10” squares are ready and waiting for a quick weekend project.

It may be fall outside, but there’s no rule saying our sewing rooms have to look like it!

Stop in and have a look at Wildflower Meadow and see what inspires you for your next project.

Stabilizer 101 - Week 1: What’s Underneath Matters!

We’re starting our Stabilizer 101 series with one of the most useful groups of stabilizers to have in your embroidery room - TearAway!
Choosing the right stabilizer really does matter. It helps keep your fabric stable while the machine is stitching, reduces puckering and distortion, and helps all those beautiful embroidery stitches land where they’re supposed to.

But which TearAway should you use? OESD gives us a few choices depending on the project.

A few TearAway tips from us:
Use enough stabilizer for the density of your design - a dense design may need more support than a light, open one. Hoop your fabric and stabilizer securely whenever possible, and when removing TearAway, support the stitches with your fingers and tear toward the design rather than pulling on your embroidery.

And remember, TearAway isn’t the best choice for everything. Stretchy knits, garments that will be washed frequently, and dense designs may need the permanent support of a CutAway instead, but that's for next week!

Stabilizer might be underneath your project where nobody sees it, but it can make all the difference in what everyone does see.

This week’s pick was an easy one for Melissa!

“I love snails, so this is an absolute must to use for my quilt!”

With rows and swirls of little snails in warm, earthy colours against a dark background, this wideback is just plain fun. There’s lots to look at without it being too busy, and we think those snails are going to make the back of a quilt almost as much fun as the front.

Sometimes you pick a wideback because it matches perfectly… and sometimes you pick it simply because you love snails!

Available now at Kawartha Quilting & Sewing.

Friday Fabric Fix - your excuse to start something new this weekend.

Who says Halloween has to be all orange and black?

Ghostly Garden by KP Creates for Andover Fabrics brings the fun with pinks, teals, lime greens and orange, mixed with ghosts, skeletons, spiderwebs and plenty of quirky little details.

And yes - there’s still time to make something for Halloween! A quick table runner, trick-or-treat bag, placemats, pillows… or just add it to your stash because cute Halloween fabric is reason enough.

Pop into the shop or take a peek online and pick your favourites before they disappear like a magic!

You’ve picked the perfect embroidery design, chosen your thread colours and have your fabric ready to go. But there’s one more choice that can make a BIG difference in your finished project - your stabilizer.
Stabilizer supports your fabric while your machine is stitching. The right one can help prevent puckering, shifting and distortion, while keeping your stitches looking smooth and your design nice and crisp.
But not every stabilizer is right for every project.
Tear-away, cut-away, wash-away, toppers, fusible, sticky-backed - they all have a purpose, and choosing the right one depends on your fabric, your embroidery design and what you’re making.
Over the next few weeks, we’re going to take a closer look at some of our OESD stabilizers, what they do and when you should reach for them.
And if you’re ever standing in front of the stabilizer wondering which one you need, bring your project into the shop. We’re always happy to help you figure it out.

Featured Wideback Wednesday

Melissa’s Pick

This week’s wideback was picked by our awesome longarmer, Melissa - and her reasons are pretty simple!
“Lime is my favourite, so that was an easy start. Then I saw it was 118” wide and that made it even better! It has flowers, leaves and a pattern that reminds me of paisley - all things I love.”
At 118” wide, this one is a great option for those larger quilts, and that gorgeous lime green adds plenty of personality to the back.

A fun pick from someone who sees a LOT of quilt backs come across her longarm!

A Little Inspiration from Houston!

I had the chance to spend some time at h+h americas in Houston, and there was definitely lots to see!

It’s always fun to wander the show floor, catch up with some of our vendors, discover new ones and see all the latest fabrics, notions, tools and ideas. Of course, I may have found a few things that caught my eye along the way!

One of the best parts of attending a show like this is getting to see everything in person, ask questions, and start thinking about what might be a good fit for our shop and our customers.

I’m heading home with ideas, plenty of inspiration and maybe a few new things in the works for Kawartha Quilting & Sewing.

Stay tuned… you never know what might be coming to the shop next!
