𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗬𝗼𝘂 for all the kind messages since Saturday's hail storm, 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 for understanding that we had to close the tulip field for the season, and 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 for visiting our farm to see the 𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗽 blooms while they lasted this 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴!

Your thoughtfulness and messages of support during the past few days have been more than we ever expected. We're sorry that we cannot respond to each of you, but we saw your notes and truly appreciate them.

Yesterday and today we cut all the damaged tulip blooms off to force all the plants energy into the bulb. Next month we'll harvest the tulip bulbs and then plant in late fall. Although it seems far away now, the colourful display of tulip blooms will be back next spring and we can't wait to welcome you back!

𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀

No need to buy packages of flower food to dump into your vase of flowers, you can make homemade flower food with ingredients found in your kitchen.

𝗗𝗜𝗬 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗲

1 tablespoon sugar (heaping)

2 tablespoons lemon juice

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1 litre of water

Mix all ingredients together and pour some of this mixture into your vase each time you change the water.

The sugar provides the food (nutrients) for the cut flowers, and the acidity of the lemon juice and apple cider vinegar prevent bacteria growth.

A question we are often asked is:
𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗽 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱?
We believe there is a perfect time for everyone during the season, it all depends on what you're hoping for.

If you want to pick the longest lasting blooms, come early in the season (𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 𝒇𝒆𝒘 𝒅𝒂𝒚𝒔) when the tulip petals of many varieties are still tight with the blooms just starting to open. Picking at this time allows you to get the longest vase life from your bouquet.

If you want to see the most tulips blooming at once come at the middle of the season (𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒌). We plant early, mid and late season blooming tulips so we are never in full bloom, but at the middle of the season you will get to see the majority of the varieties open.

If you're all about photos mid to late season is the best time to capture the rainbow of colours in the field.

Mother Nature decides the length of the season because the weather, especially temperature, dictates how long the blooms will last but usually the tulip season lasts 2 weeks.

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀:
1. Remove all lower leaves
2. Recut stems on a diagonal before putting them in the vase
3. Avoid direct sunlight
4. Place in vase of cold water but only about half fill the vase. Tulips have a soft stems that are water sensitive and can quickly go mushy in too much water.
5. Change water every 2 days to keep it fresh.
