Can you guess the original colour of this floor grout?
If you said white… you would unfortunately be correct 🤦🏼‍♀️

Why I thought this was a fabulous idea:
✅ White grout + white tile = minimal grout lines
✅ The herringbone inlay would feel softer and less “busy”
✅ It looked AMAZING in my Pinterest inspo photos…

Well.
About 24 hours later, and ever since… it has not been white again 😂

Here’s what I would do differently now:
👍 Pull a colour directly from the tile itself (even one shade lighter or darker works beautifully)
👍 Choose an off-white, taupe, or light grey with the same undertone as the tile
👍 Remember that what works online doesn’t always work in real life

A lot of designer/influencer spaces are:
professionally staged
professionally photographed
edited
OR they have someone scrubbing grout weekly 😅

So if you’re someone who likes learning from experience instead of the hard way… consider this your warning from Past Michelle 😜

Turning 40 this week gave me a lot of perspective — not in a “where has the time gone?” kind of way, but in a way that made me reflect on what truly energizes me, what I’m grateful for, and what I want to continue building moving forward.

For a while, I stepped back from my design work.

The intention was never to walk away — just to create some space. Space to focus on family, explore other ventures, and reset after a season that felt full in every direction.

What shouldn’t have been a surprise, was how much I missed this work.

Not just the design itself, but the conversations, the problem solving, and the feeling of helping someone create a space that truly works better for their life.

Even during my “break,” design never really left me. I still found myself thinking about layouts, materials, functionality, and all the little details that make a home feel intentional.

At some point, I realized this isn’t just something I do - it’s something that naturally shows up in how I move through the world.

So I’m stepping back into this chapter with more clarity, more experience, and a much stronger understanding of the kind of work I want to focus on moving forward: practical, thoughtful, livable design that works in real life.

I’m really happy to be back ♥️
