Old is G O L D
Restoring an old house built in the 1960s, has been an absolute joy for me! This process began in 2021, and will take a few more visits to Almora, Uttarakhand. This house is my very own canvas, as it’s mine!
Almora has a special place in my heart; it’s where I was born (in an even older house that is in ruins currently). I’d been determined to restore this house, that had been locked for years. So on a shoestring budget I started repairs in 2021, slowly working on my dream project which includes restoring some of the old furniture we grew up using.
I’ve incorporated my favourite shade of blue, the Kumaoni Blue, wherever possible. This door wasn’t needed anymore, so now an exposed brick wall has taken its place, creating a niche in the 18” deep stone wall, with functional storage space that is accessed from top by lifting a hinged counter where the lamp sits. A couple of more movable shelves have been added for aesthetic/ functional purposes. The big eyesore, an old switchboard I painted with little hibiscus 🌺 flowers, and framed it. The crowning glory is the Headboard, for which I used one shutter of the old double door that once stood here. Got all the old paint scraped and sanded off. Now the beautiful Deodar grains are visible and the natural scent of the wood fills up the air around the bed!
