Meritaten, whose name means “Beloved of the Aten,” was the firstborn daughter of Pharaoh Akhenaten and Queen Nefertiti during ancient Egypt’s revolutionary Amarna period.

Born in Thebes during the early years of her father’s reign, she was named in honor of the Aten.

As a princess of the royal house, Meritaten’s importance grew significantly over time, particularly after her mother Nefertiti’s mysterious disappearance from historical records. She assumed many of the queen’s ceremonial and political duties, eventually becoming Great Royal Wife upon her marriage to Smenkhkare.

Known in diplomatic correspondence as “Mayati,” she appears prominently in Amarna’s art and architecture, both in intimate family scenes and formal state occasions.

She was the eldest of six royal daughters, followed by Meketaten (who died young), Ankhesenpaaten (later Ankhesenamun), Neferneferuaten Tasherit, Neferneferure, and Setepenre.

Happy Easter! 🐣

Did you know that Easter falls on a different date for Western churches compared to the Coptic Orthodox Church?

Western churches (Catholic and Protestant) calculate Easter as the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, which is the first full moon on or after March 21st.

However, the Coptic Orthodox Church still uses the older Julian calendar to determine the date. Their Easter always falls after Passover, based on the Jewish calendar.

So while Western Easter can occur anytime between March 22 and April 25, Coptic Easter often falls 1-2 weeks later. In some years the dates align, but most years Coptic Easter trails Western Easter by a week or more.

Statue of Ramses II

New Empire, XIX* dynasty, reign of Ramses II, around 1290-1224 BC.

Granodiorite

Excavated from Bubastis between 1889 and 1891 by the Genevan Egyptologist Édouard Naville

The pharaoh, sitting on a seat whose three sides bear the inscription of his throne and birth names, is adorned with the clothes and insignia typical of royalty: the nemes, a striped fabric headgear, the uraeus (partially broken), a hairdress beard, a short loincloth. The buckle of his belt is engraved with the name of “Ramsès, beloved of Amon”.

“Let me tell you something man, see that horn, that horn ain’t prejudiced. A note’a a note in any language.”

Louis Armstrong visited Egypt as part of a US state department sponsored trip in 1961. He arrived in Cairo with his wife Lucille, and was toured around the wonders by renowned Egyptian archeologist Kamal el-Mullakh.

His US dollars were exchanged for the local Egyptian Pounds at an American Express office in Cairo (receipt attached). Also included is a hand written note from El-Mallakh translating the Armstrong’s names into Hieroglyphics.

He preformed in Cairo at a private concert, the American Embassy, a children’s orphanage, and most memorably at the Great Sphinx.

The photos are now iconic, capturing the fusion of Armstrong’s melodious notes & the timeless Egyptian landscape.

It’s difficult to appreciate the size of these enormous statues until you get close. They stand a staggering 60’ (18 metres) tall.

Merry Christmas!

Our family has always celebrated two Christmas days, December 25th & January 7th.

The difference in date is from the Coptic Chuch’s use of the Julian calendar, instead of the Gregorian calendar we are more familiar with.

The Julian calendar (designed by Julius Caesar) was used widely used until Pope Gregory XIII introduced a new version in 1582 to more astronomically accurate.

The Julian calendar assumed the average solar year to be 365.25 days long. The more accurate measurement used by Pope Gregory is 365.2425 days. It may not seem like a big difference, but it adds up to an extra day per century!

During the French revolution, another calendar was introduced, the French Republican Calendar. This was part of the French project of decimalization, where we get our modern metric system of measure.

This calendar featured 12 months, each made up of three 10 day weeks. The few extra days (called complimentary days) each year would be added to the last month, a system reminiscent of the Ancient Egyptian calendar.

Calendars are neat, Merry Christmas! 🎄 🗓️
