Thanksgiving is Monday. If you're hosting, here's a little inspiration for the room everyone gathers in.

This design concept shows a harvest table at golden hour, with sheer smoke-mauve drapery catching the low autumn sun and turning it into a warm glow rather than a glare. Candles, dark dahlias, linen, and a window that feels like part of the table setting.

Burgundy in the bedroom: brave choice or best choice? Our design team knows which side we're on.

This design concept is built around custom velvet drapery in a deep burgundy, lined with blackout so it's as practical as it is beautiful. Behind it sits a simple mauve roller shade for daytime privacy.

Custom drapery looks custom because of fullness. Panels sized for the wall, not just the window, hang in rich, even folds. That's the difference between curtains and drapery.

If you've followed Allure for a while, you'll notice our page looks a little different this month. That's on purpose.

We're the Allure Design Team, and we want this page to feel more like walking through the rooms we dream up for clients: finished spaces, beautiful fabrics, and windows dressed the way they deserve.

This first one is a living room in burgundy, mauve and chocolate brown. The custom mauve linen drapery is hung close to the ceiling and well past the frame, a simple choice that makes ordinary windows feel grand.

Quick safety note from me, not a sales pitch: corded window blinds are a documented strangulation hazard for young children and pets, and it's still the most common style I find installed in older Calgary homes.

The fix is straightforward; cordless is now the industry standard, available as spring-lift, motorized, or a fully enclosed cord loop, and it costs less to switch than most people assume.

A lot of the corded blinds still hanging in Calgary homes were installed before cordless became standard, so the risk isn't about an old or cheap product, it's just timing. Retrofitting a single problem window is usually a same-day fix for my install team.

If your home office window sits behind or beside your monitor, I already know the problem: glare that makes video calls unusable for part of the day. I hear this from clients constantly.

My fix is never full blackout; it's controlling exactly how much light gets through with the right solar shade opening factor. I start at a tighter weave (3%) for a west-facing desk with harsh afternoon sun, and a more open weave (5–10%) for a milder morning office.

Most people either overcorrect with a full blackout shade that kills natural light all day, or stick with sheers that do nothing during the worst hours. The right percentage is a narrower target than that, and it depends entirely on which direction your desk actually faces.

It's a fifteen-minute conversation that solves something you've probably just been working around for months.

"Custom" gets thrown around loosely in this industry, so as the designer who actually does the measuring, here's what it means when I say it.

Four steps, none of them skippable: I measure every opening to the millimetre, spec the fabric and mount for that specific window, send it to be fabricated to that exact size, then oversee the install.

Compare that to a big-box stock shade trimmed down to roughly fit, the difference shows up in how it hangs, how smoothly it raises and lowers, and how long the mechanism lasts before something binds.

It's also why two windows in the same room can need two different specs on my sheet. Older Calgary homes especially have openings that are out of square by more than people expect, and a stock shade has no way to account for that.

Which step surprised you? For me it's still the measuring, every time; homes have more variation window to window than people expect.
