Every now and then it's great to throw on the apron and get back on the tools.

My wife and I, with the help of family and friends, started this A Frame cottage reno back in 2017. This fall we closed the building permit ... bring on the property tax increase 🤪

Although not new to reno projects this one had some challenges: 3 hours from our principal residence, mainly weekend work thru spring/summer/fall, and of course a pandemic that brought us that wonderful phrase called "supply chain issues.".

Working on an 18:12 pitch roof was also a first. Drop your tape measure and you're headed back down to the ground to pick it up. I also got to test my carpentry skills by framing a bastard hip roof ... that took some head scratching.

Overall, we are happy with the result. While my wife looks forward to some R&R next summer at our happy place, I'm starting to draft up the next project 😉 🪚🔨. Stay tuned ...

Took a different approach to this project. Instead of adding pigment to the epoxy it was kept clear. The two pieces of walnut are connected with cherry bow ties, which I think creates a unique effect.
Oh yeah, this one required lots of sanding and polishing to get that epoxy translucent.
Finally, the board was finished with Odie's Oil and Wood Butter.

A close family friend recently reached out to me looking for a unique charcuterie board as a wedding gift. Just so happened that both the bride and groom are firefighters, which made the theme of this board a no brainer.
I had the perfect piece of 12"x24" live edge, cracked walnut that when filled with red epoxy simulated a flame. An axe head profile was cut out as the board's handle. The Maltese cross, names and date were laser engraved.
To the bride and groom and all first responders ... thank you for your service!
