For historical fiction lovers, I highly recommend All the Broken Places. Where WWII fiction is typically told from the Allies point of view, All the Broken Places tells the story of a family who wasn’t on the right side of history. The whole book is thought-provoking and fast-paced.

Warm scones and tea are shared between Gretel and her future daughter-in-law, Eleanor, during a tender bonding moment where Gretel finally opens up and shares a little bit of her past. Gretel comes across as a little sweet and a little zesty inspiring these cranberry orange scones. The scones pair beautifully with a cup of black tea and a visit with friends.

This book is a wild and quirky ride with a cast of hilarious characters and a lot of heart. Demetr, a spaceship tasked with shuttling humans, is thwarted at every turn by a host of monsters who keep killing her passengers and putting her at risk of decommission. If you like found family, monsters (both good and bad), sci-fi, humorous horror, and AI characters that are not trying to annihilate humans for once, then I highly recommend you give this book a shot!

If you are looking for the perfect November read, you must consider The Witching Moon Manor! This sequel to the Crescent Moon Tearoom gives witchy spooky season vibes yet is set in the holiday season without being overtly Christmas-ey, therefore IMO, the perfect transition from Halloween month to the holidays. The author weaves a story of sisterhood that is both whimsical and hopeful. Oh, and did I mention, it’s cozy as hell?

I am in constant awe of Grady Hendrix’s ability to write from a teenage girl’s perspective and get it right. The thoughts, the feelings, the vocabulary of women and girls in different parts of history. The guy does his research. This is my second book of his that I’ve read and it has solidified him as one of my favourite horror authors. He’s so good at evoking a certain place and time. His books make you think and feel and are so much more than shock and awe.

In Witchcraft for Wayward girls we follow Fern, a teenager who is sent to a home for u***d mothers. Through research and the experiences of those close to him Grady captures life in the 1970’s and the absolute vitriol everyone felt towards girls who dared to get pregnant.

As Fern and her new friends experience constant victim blaming, harassment, judgement and dismissiveness, they get the urge to fight back and take their future for themselves. Enter the librarian. A witch who promises them power and revenge. The girls quickly get in over their heads and band together to fight the evils without and within.

Things are changing around here. And we are excited! 🤓 Beth and I have created a blog where our more in-depth book reviews and recipes will live. We’ll still be sharing our weekly recipe+read with you, but we’re hoping Instagram will be a little more slice-of-life and a little less structured. Let’s see how we do. We are nothing if not over planners! 😂

First up, my October TBR stack. What should I read next?

I just read Graveyard Shift by M.L. Rio. It was a good quick read (144 pages) for when you are wanting unsettling graveyard vibes with a multi-pov mystery. Sometimes you just need a book you can read all in one sitting.

This is my first Ali Hazelwood and I am happy to say, it was a win! I couldn’t resist a little Vampire/Werewolf romance in the month of October. I loved the characters and the plot but I do have some thoughts on the spice and plot twist. 🤔

These Cranberry-Orange “Vampire” Jelly Donuts are inspired by Misery. Although the only non-blood food she eats is peanut butter, I think she would find these very tempting!

📕“Cute and cutting” would be the caption I would use if I had to sum up The Guncle in just a couple words, fortunately for you (or unfortunately?😆) I’ve got 2200 characters, so let’s go! Patrick, a semi-retired actor with cutting wit and banter to match, temporarily finds himself the sole care-giver to his nephew and niece. The kids, an adorable six year old with a lisp, and his protective older sister, are weathering the loss of a parent. As “Guncle Patrick” and his charges struggle to find a way through their grief, he begins to question if he is the best person to help them.

✍️ I wasn’t convinced in the first couple chapters, Patrick’s character felt like a caricature —cartoonish and trying a little too hard. But, as the story carried on I found myself rooting for Patrick and his niece and nephew and by the time I finished the book I was tearing up, smirking at the banter and fully onboard with Patrick’s “Guncle Rules”. Thank you Kelly for the fun book recommendation!

🍉I completely agree with this rule! One of my favorite meals to plan (and eat) is brunch. Both savory and sweet dishes are acceptable with an emphasis on indulgence; what more could you want out of a meal? If you love a cozy story, this one’s for you! The Crescent Moon Tearoom is full of sisterhood, mystery, magic and a pinch of romance. Triplets; Anne, Beatrix and Violet, have found their place in the world reading fortunes in tea leaves. The sisters seem to be on a lifelong path to success with their tea shop until a family curse rears it’s head and threatens to sever their connection forever.

The cozy tea shop vibes are on point in this mystery novel. With every steaming cup of tea the sisters serve, there is a slice of honey cake or another sweet treat on the side. Do not attempt to read this book on an empty stomach! In fact, I suggest having a slice of this Earl Grey Tea Cake with Honey Buttercream and a cup of tea at the ready, for maximum reading pleasure. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What is your go to reading snack? Mine is usually a cup of a tea and some fruit or dry apple cinnamon Cheerios.
