Can we normalize homes that aren't “finished”?
There will always be another room, piece of furniture, light fixture, another project and that's okay. I work in design and even my own home continues to change.

Buy the piece you love. Wait for the right artwork. Live with the empty corner for a while.

I'd rather see a home slowly filled with things someone genuinely loves than one filled quickly just so it can be called "done."

DESIGNER CONFESSION: I don't think open concept is always better.

For years, the answer to almost every renovation seemed to be, tear down the walls! and sometimes that's absolutely the right decision. But sometimes a wall can help create intimacy, give furniture somewhere to live, and hide the kitchen mess when you're entertaining.

I'm much more interested in creating good flow between rooms than automatically turning an entire main floor into one giant room.

Open concept can be beautiful. But so can a home with actual rooms.

Sometimes my job is actually talking a client OUT of spending money.

More expensive doesn't automatically mean better. There are places in a project where I think it's worth investing and there are other places where we can pull back without sacrificing the overall design.

A big part of my job is figuring out where the money will have the most impact.
Good design isn't about spending the most. It's about spending intentionally.

One of the easiest ways to make a room feel flat is buying the matching sofa, loveseat, chair, coffee table and end tables all from the same collection. Do they coordinate? Absolutely. Is it boring? 100%

I love mixing pieces that complement each other without perfectly matching; different textures, woods, and pieces from different eras.

Your home should feel like it developed over time and not shopped in an afternoon.

Facebook and Instagram are full of finished spaces. What you don't often see is the sawdust, sample boxes, blueprints, delivery delays and countless small decisions behind every project.

Please Don't Pick Your Paint Colour First...

I know it's tempting. Paint seems like the easiest place to start. But it's actually one of the last decisions I make.

Cabinetry.
Countertops.
Tile.
Flooring.
Furniture.

These items are much harder to change and usually have fewer options where as paint can be matched to almost anything.

Have you ever picked a paint colour that looked completely different once it was on the wall? I've painted a few fails.
