Sometimes a new fabric comes in and I have to drop everything and sew it up. This is a 40% Silk, 60% cotton with a digital print that screamed "sew me up!" And since it was my birthday yesterday (42!) I whipped up a treat for myself.
You can use fancy fabrics for fancy clothes, but I love a simple silhouette and a quick make when I have a bold print.
Unfortunately I used a favourite pattern from years ago, forgetting that bodies do, in fact, change over the course of ten years (especially with all the strength training I'm doing at !) so the fit is a little snug across the back and chest- doesn't move as easily as I'd like, so it's a sample in the shop and I guess I'll have to make another!
This is the second garment I've made recently using patterns that are too small for me- which is great for a friend of mine who is smaller- but tells me it's time for a clear out of patterns and a fresh set of measurements.
I never change my body to fit clothes, and am finding a lot of curiosity and joy in the way my body changes over the years- softening, shifting, rounding but also building up muscles that I haven't had before. Exercising regularly has made my body take more space, move more confidently, stand taller.
Each time there's a change, it's an excuse to make something new to fit me, and to share my previous makes with friends- or upcycle into another garment!
