Sometimes a new fabric comes in and I have to drop everything and sew it up. This is a 40% Silk, 60% cotton with a digital print that screamed "sew me up!" And since it was my birthday yesterday (42!) I whipped up a treat for myself.

You can use fancy fabrics for fancy clothes, but I love a simple silhouette and a quick make when I have a bold print.

Unfortunately I used a favourite pattern from years ago, forgetting that bodies do, in fact, change over the course of ten years (especially with all the strength training I'm doing at !) so the fit is a little snug across the back and chest- doesn't move as easily as I'd like, so it's a sample in the shop and I guess I'll have to make another!

This is the second garment I've made recently using patterns that are too small for me- which is great for a friend of mine who is smaller- but tells me it's time for a clear out of patterns and a fresh set of measurements.

I never change my body to fit clothes, and am finding a lot of curiosity and joy in the way my body changes over the years- softening, shifting, rounding but also building up muscles that I haven't had before. Exercising regularly has made my body take more space, move more confidently, stand taller.

Each time there's a change, it's an excuse to make something new to fit me, and to share my previous makes with friends- or upcycle into another garment!

This was supposed to be a challenge project for my teen helper- but she whipped it up in two days! Fully lined, boning for structure, hand appliquéd with vintage doilies- adjusted the pattern for laces instead of a zip!

How cute when mother and kiddo start a hobby together?? Sarah took Fundamentals and has been sewing up a storm- including this lovely linen dress- and her kiddo is in classes and has made pants, a Tshirt and just last week- a stuffy of a PlayStation controller for her brother. (Fish bag hiding her face for privacy!)
Apparently the machine at home is in near constant whirring and chugging as they all take turns exploring making things by hand- a point of connection, creativity and skill building!

Our fall kids classes will release JUNE 1, and adult fall classes are already posted and registrations are starting to trickle in!

Sometimes you just gotta lean into the dorky and also match your favourite Rhodo!

Appliqué is a super fun way to add cool- or dorky- stuff to your clothes!

Just a fresh faced group of Foundations Grads! This group gets it- they were making friends and changing the world as we worked to make this cool bag. Supporting each other, laughing at mistakes, getting together for coffee after class; I really watched community happen before my eyes!

Yes, we have dress up supplies in our sewing studio! I call these the "therapeutic petticoats" and let it be known (especially to teens), that if they are having a bad day, they can just say "I need a petticoat". It's hard to be sad or mad when you're this twirly.

Found this old video from 2020 of me tracing patterns from a sewing magazine. I still carry a few in the shop because they can be great value, even if it means an extra step.

Sometimes our excitement to get to the sewing makes tracing patterns seem like a hassle, and sometimes doing it anyway has unexpected benefits.

Slowing down, looking carefully and drawing smooth lines requires focus, and slow breath. Being present and noticing. In 2020, we needed ways to breathe and be present- and in 2026 we still do!

Who knew a tote bag could make one so joyful.
It can when you make it yourself!
Learning something new is fun, it's brave, and it helps us grow as humans and as community.

The most powerful thing is not seeing a project finish- but watching people form connections, seeing people change patterns of self doubt, hearing people share stories.
